Pattern 5: SVOO (Subject + Verb +
Indirect Object + Direct Object)
The mother

1. Verb in this pattern must be transitive.
2. The indirect object can be replaced by a
prepositional phrase.
ex: The mother bought the girl a dress
becomes The mother bought a dress for
the girl.

• Tim told his friends something exciting.
The university had awarded him a
scholarship. The scholarship committee
sent him the news yesterday. Tim showed
me the letter. It gave him all details. Each
month, the university will mail him a check.
Then he must pay the university the
required fee. The university has given Tim
a very great honor.
