Two Positions Open for Food Waste Study Application deadline January 15, 2016 A broad-­‐based Island committee has been funded to lead a year-­‐long study to identify Island-­‐wide food scrap collection and processing opportunities on Martha’s Vineyard. The timing of the study is critical as state mandates will be implemented in the near future. The goal of responsible recycling and use of food waste on the Island is of concern to both year-­‐round and summer visitors. The committee is recruiting for two half-­‐time positions to carry out the work of the project. The project will be directed by the committee with The Farm Institute serving as the fiscal agent and grant manager. The scope of the project is as follows: • Conducting waste audits for commercial food entities—both groceries and restaurants. • Researching collection and processing options • Working closely with an oversight committee representing a variety of organizations concerned with food waste and with a highly qualified food waste consultant already hired, • Analyzing collection and processing options most suitable for the island, considering cost, transportation, treatment options, environmental benefits and costs. • Building island-­‐wide awareness of the food waste issues. • Completing a report for use in decision-­‐making and planning by private and public entities. Project Leader A strong project leader is needed to see that the ambitious study goals can be completed on time. Scope of work will include: Qualifications The Food Waste Study Project Leader must have strong project leadership and management skills around both complex environmental issues and sensitive political and social issues. A background in research, environmental sciences, natural resource management, conservation, public or business administration would all be relevant. Desirable but not necessary would be experience in the study of food waste management issues, laws or implementation. The expert consultant and members of the supervising committee will be active partners and can provide technical guidance. The Project Leader will supervise the Project Intern in completing the project work. Required skills: The ability to multitask, implement established project research goals and timelines and partner well with the committee, project intern, consultants, waste generators, haulers and others will be essential. Strong computer, writing, database and presentation skills. This is a half time position for one year. Hourly compensation to be negotiated. Please email a resume and no more than ten pages of a report or other document representing your work to mv_waste_study@farminstitute.org Project Intern Qualifications The project intern will assist the Project Leader in all phases of the food waste study. The intern should have at least two years of college or other advanced training in areas such as environmental studies, resource management, biology, public health, social change. Research experience is highly desirable. Direct experience or education related to food waste management is desirable but not required. This position is half time for one year, with possibilities for future work when the project is completed. Basic computer skills and the ability to work with databases. Good writing skills. The ability to follow directions, work under timelines and work collaboratively with the project supervisor, the committee, consultants and a variety of people to accomplish the project goals.
