Because contemporary religion can touch the
daily lives of every working professional, from
local merchants to international financiers,
CGU’s School of Religion has created Religion
for Professionals, a Master’s program that provides
practical knowledge for those in the fields of education,
media, human resources, civil government, culture,
and many others. Tailor a curriculum in keeping with
your interests and industry, and learn how scripture,
history, theology, and spirituality affect everything
from world politics to local government.

MA Unit Requirements
The MA requires a minimum of 32
units (eight courses), with no additional
requirements other than the Master’s
Seminar in Religion and that your
curriculum involves the study of at
least two different religions.
Courses Overview
While some of our courses deal with
the interface between religion, politics,
and culture, other courses will pursue
an in-depth study of a particular religion,
its scripture, history, theology, spirituality,
and/or worship. The program advisor
will work closely with you to make sure
there is harmonious balance between
the different kinds of courses.
Courses will be taken mostly from the
regular offerings of the School of Religion
but may also include a maximum of two
courses from other schools at CGU.
Examine. Enlighten. Transform.

for our graduates but

has always been relevant,
and is now increasing in the twenty-first
century. Having a better understanding of
the world’s religions and how they function
will help you do your job better, regardless
of whether you work in public education,
where classrooms are increasingly multicultural and multi-religious, at media outlets
with audiences around the globe, or in any
area of government and human resources.
Because of CGU’s emphasis on
“transdisciplinary” education, you will
have access to courses and scholars at our
sister schools and colleges, guaranteeing
that your degree is based on “research
that matters” across a variety of fields.
The School of Religion
offers merit-based
fellowships that are
highly competitive and
awarded on a case-bycase basis. Applicants
are notified at the time
of admission of their
fellowship eligibility.

Interdisciplinary
Opportunities
Students regularly take
courses and interact with
faculty and students in
other CGU departments,
including history, English,
cultural studies, and
music. Further, you
may take advantage of
the expertise of other
faculty at the Claremont
Colleges, in areas such as
Asian religions, AfricanAmerican religions, New
Testament, women’s studies,
and US history. Such
interdisciplinary work is
required as part of a broad
and vital course of doctoral
study and preparation
for scholarly research
and teaching.
