ECONOMIC MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE
INDEPENDENT UNIT
How well have measures of Canada’s economic performance really measured the wellbeing of its citizens?
How has the standard of living across various regions of Canada differed?
How has Canada’s standard of living compared to other countries in the world?
The overall performance of Canada’s economy is of great interest to all Canadians and
those around the world. Our 4 important indicators that measure performance are Gross
Domestic Product, Inflation, Unemployment and Standard of Living. These statistics
are quoted often by politicians, businesspeople and of course economists. In this unit, we
will assess their validity in measuring our well-being.
Your tasks for this unit include:
1)
Chapter 9 – An Introduction to Macroeconomics
 Take notes and answer all Check your Understanding questions (p.202,
206, 212)
 Complete Applying Okun’s Law (pg 206)
 End of chapter activities (pg 214) #2-6, 12.
2)
Brief Position Paper - Is the GDP statistic a valid measure for economic
growth? (2-3 pages)
3)
Compare Canada’s economic performance to that of another country. Include
the statistical measures of population, GDP, GDP per capita, poverty rates,
inflation and unemployment, update them to current Canadian rates and
compare it with another country. Write a short response (1-2 pages) as to
which economy is performing better and who has the better standard of living.
This assignment must include a works cited.

319, 325)
 End of chapter activities (p.329) #1, 6, and 9 (for #1 use the same country
you use in 3).

Chapter 15 – Equity and Income Distribution
 Take notes and answer all Check your Understanding questions (p.339,
344, 352)
 End of chapter activities (p. 355) #3, 9.

Culminating Activity – Panel Discussion
You will, in groups of 2, be representing a national region and assess
economic performance statistics’ ability to measure standard of living. The
panel discussion will discuss the following question:
How well has Canada’s economic measures of performance really measured
the well being of its citizens?
