We Educate for Excellence……….
Empowering all students to achieve their educational goals, to direct their lives and to contribute to society.
Let’s Cut to the Core….
Breaking it Down….One Ah-ha Moment At A Time: The Last in a Series of Common Core Articles
Evidence Based Reading and Writing Does Not Just Mean Writing Reports (Wessling, 2010).
Throughout the standards documents, textual evidence to support reading and writing is a consistent requirement from the primary grades through high
school. Students must learn the difference between literal and inferential questions. They must be able to analyze text and support details with direct evidence from the text. Students are asked to write arguments that support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant
sufficient evidence. Students are also asked to write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts and information clearly
and accurately throughout the effective selection, organization and analysis of the content. Students are asked to use domain specific vocabulary, select significant and relevant facts, and use quotations, examples and other information relevant to the writer's purpose and audience. (CCSS, 2010)
As readers, students are asked to cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis and inferences. They are asked to read foundational
works of American literature, history and science while analyzing and evaluating content, reasoning and claims in diverse formats “to gain keener insight into
the integration of knowledge and ideas,” (CCSS, 2010). Further, readers analyze multiple interpretations of a story, drama, or poems beginning in the primary
years. As educators, we must evaluate what we do now, and look forward to the future requirements, understanding that some of the books we used to read,
some of the tests and quizzes we used to use, or the writing assignments that served us well in the past, might need to be revised, or even cast aside for more
rigorous assignments. Sarah Wessling sums this up well when she states, “We must remember when our choices are purposeful we will find ways to intersect
the Common Core Standards with the integrity of our classroom.”

Want to see some high level thinking and questions? Check out these
links to the PISA and TIMMS tests. The links contain sample test items
that might help you design assessments or classroom experiences at a
higher level. PISA is given to a random sample of 15 year old students
and TIMMS is administered to students in grades 4 and 8. This site
might provide some extension ideas for students at the high end of the
continuum!!
