KINDER NEWS
Reading: Reading is THINKING!!
WHAT’S NEW?
Our fiction unit gave us lots of opportunities to practice thinking
strategies. We will continue to practice using comprehension strategies as we read in our small
groups and during independent reading time. I sent home a Reading Checklist that also included
your child’s reading level so you can continue to support your kinder at home on their reading
journey! We will be starting to explore nonfiction texts, next!
Phonics:
Our readers have been continuing to practice blends and phoneme manipulation. We
are going to be spending a bit of time on long vowels – reviewing vowel pairs and focusing on silent
e.
Writing: Writer’s Workshop is back!!
We have jumped into How To writing. This is such a fun
unit; our writers get to focus on things they are “experts” on and teach others how to do it.
Encourage writing at home, as well, to: build confidence, create & strengthen identity, foster
emotional growth, develop critical thinking skills and improve in academic achievements.
Math: The kinders have been exploring measurement, through weight, capacity and length.
They
have participated in many hands-on activities and group discussions.
