The ashes we use are the burnt palms from last year's celebration of Passion Sunday.

We begin our Lenten journey aware of where we are going.

We want to enter into the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus for us more fully.

That is the purpose of our journey. It is why we mark our heads with his cross.

It is why we fast today and abstain from meat.

Our Lenten program is not an effort to save ourselves.

We have been saved by his sacrifice.

Our self-denial helps us, in the darkness that surrounds us, to prepare ourselves to receive his light.

For this is a journey to the Easter font, where we will renew the promises of our Baptism, remembering that in dying with him in the waters of Baptism, we are re-born with him to everlasting life. guardianangels@bell.net

This year's journey begins today. Yet even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God.

For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment.

- Joel 2:12-13

Teaching Children the Virtue of Respect

There are many ways people show respect, and the more aware children are of what respectful actions look and sound like, the more likely they are to incorporate those behaviors in their daily lives. Keep in mind that schools may teach children about respect, however it is parents who hold the most influence over their children. If you are caught bad-mouthing the opposing team during a soccer game or screaming an obscenity at someone who just cut you off, your child will take this as a cue that it’s okay to be disrespectful to others.

Most importantly, treat your children with respect. Truly listen to them when they have something to say. Let them know that their words and feelings are important to you. Help them learn to appreciate and take care of their things by respecting their personal property.

Remember, you are your child’s role model and they constantly look to you for clues to be the best person they can be.

Terms of the recent contract settlement between the teacher federations and the Ministry of Education included the provision of an additional Professional Activity Day for the 2015-2016 school year for both elementary and secondary schools. Recently, boards were directed to schedule this additional Professional

Development Day on or before April 15, 2016.

In the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, the designated additional Professional Activity Day has been scheduled for Monday, APRIL 11, 2016. Therefore, there will be no classes for either elementary or secondary students on

Monday, April 11, 2016.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH – FAMOUS CANADIANS

February is Black History Month, a time to reflect on the stories, experiences, and accomplishments of Canada's black community.

Lincoln Alexander was a lawyer, Member of

Parliament, cabinet minister and war veteran, but he is perhaps best known as the former lieutenant governor of Ontario. Alexander was the first person from a visible minority to take on the role, and the first black Member of Parliament in

Canadian history. Alexander died on Oct. 19, 2012. He was 90.

BOOK FAIR

St. Lucy Catholic Elementary School is once again hosting the Scholastic Book Fair the week of January

29th to February 5th. Purchasing books from your school’s book fair helps raise funds to purchase new books and materials for the library.

Students will have the opportunity to visit the sale during the week and complete a wish list to bring home to show parents.

Students may purchase books from the sale during the day of their class visit. Parents and students are invited to come to the sale during the Parent-Teacher Interview evening on February 4 th .

COLD WEATHER EXPECTATIONS

Our winter season is here!

At this time we would like to remind all students to dress appropriately for the season.

Proper winter attire should include: hats, gloves/mitts, winter coats and boots.

When students are dressed properly for the winter conditions, they can go outside and enjoy some fresh air and activity in comfort.

There will be a few times during the course of the year where a recess may be shortened or held indoors due to extreme cold temperatures. Our school board policy states that although consideration should be given for keeping students indoors during recesses when the wind chill reaches –20 C, students are to be kept indoors during recesses when the wind chill reaches– 25 C.

In the colder weather, we receive numerous requests to allow children to remain indoors when students have a cold, the flu, etc. Please note that we cannot comply, as we neither have the facilities nor the staff to supervise these students. Moreover, health officials indicate that the fresh air is good for children, not harmful as long as they are dressed appropriately.

ECO- INTIATIVES - IT’S WINTER!!

Don’t Hibernate - walk to school and celebrate!

Walking to and from school allows children to be more active and is linked to physical and mental wellness as well as academic performance. The Safe School Team will be promoting every Wednesday as ‘walk to school day’.

Thursday, February 4 th - St. Lucy staff and students celebrate National sweater day.

This is an Eco friendly initiative that promotes using less heat. On Thursday, the temperature of the school will drop by 2 degrees. Wear a cozy, warm sweater!!

E-MAIL - NEWSLETTERS

Currently, we have 60% percent of our families signed up to receive the newsletter via e-mail.

Please help us in becoming eco-friendly by reducing paper costs, and signing up to receive school communications via the e-mail.

If interested, contact the office staff.

IMMUNIZATION RECORDS – REGION OF PEEL

The Region of Peel will be mailing out the second letter of students who do not have their immunization up to date.

Peel Public Health monitors the immunization records of all students to ensure that they are in compliance and able to attend school. Students found with incomplete immunization records will be suspended.

INDOOR SHOES

Please ensure that your children have a pair of shoes to put on at school during the winter season. If the fire alarm sounds, we need to leave the building, immediately and students will not have time to put on their outdoor foot wear.

INTERMEDIATE BALLROOM DANCING

We are pleased to announce that Future Steps has been attending St. Lucy School, teaching ballroom dancing to our intermediate students. This Dance program consists of eight weekly sessions taught by

Future Steps’ quality instructors. Children are taught classic

Ballroom and Latin dances in a simple step-by-step manner. They are learning dance culture, geography and history and music recognition. Students are led through syllabus steps of the Quick

Step, Merengue and Tango.

NEW PEDS POLICY

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board acknowledges the value of the use of technology for learning. Students are permitted to register and use personal electronic devices (PEDs) on board premises and/or board sanctioned events for educational purposes, under the direction of staff and only with parent/guardian permission. Students may register their PED for the purpose of connecting to the board wireless network.

Students are required to adhere to the student “Personal

Electronic Device Used with WI-FI Network Student Agreement”

(GF 337) and the “Network User Application and Agreement.”

(GF066) Please be advised that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic

District School Board will not be responsible for any cost incurred through the use of personal data plans.

PEDs are to be used responsibly and should not interfere with learning; their use must comply with the Catholic Code of

Conduct, board policies and procedures. Any personal communications (i.e., phone calls, text messages, etc.) will continue to be directed through the main office.

Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in a loss of PED privileges and/or any other consequences deemed necessary by school administration.

The school principal may authorize limited acceptable uses of personal electronic devices during school-sanctioned activities for a specific designated purpose outside of instructional spaces and/or in common areas.

Students are responsible for the safety and security of PEDs at all times and the Board assumes no responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices .

REPORT CARDS AND INTERVIEWS

This is a reminder that report cards will be sent home on Tuesday,

February 2 . Interviews will be scheduled on Thursday, February 4

(3:45pm to 8:45pm) and on Friday, February 5 (9am to 3pm).

ROUGH PLAY

While outside during recess students sometimes find themselves engaging in inappropriate activities that involve rough play. Pushing, shoving, tackling, play fighting and wrestling are all unacceptable activities that compromise student safety. Please reinforce with your children the inherent dangers of rough play, even when the intent is fun.

Scientists in School (SiS) enable Kindergarten to Grade 8 students to become 'scientists in their school', catalyzing long-lasting interest in science, technology, math, environmental stewardship and engineering. SiS provides opportunities for young learners to interact with ecologists, physicists, engineers opening their minds to future careers in science-related fields and fostering innovation. To further enhance curriculum programs, students at St. Lucy will learn through highly investigative classroom or community workshops throughout the course of the year. Stay tuned for dates from your child’s classroom teacher.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

Our next School Council meeting, is on

March 29, 2016. All meeting take place commencing at 6:30 p.m. in the library or conference room. Parents and guardians are always welcomed.

SNOW AND ICE

Snow is part of our winter life in Canada, providing both frustration and enjoyment. We all like to play in it.

Throwing snowballs and sliding on ice is fun. However, snow and ice can be very dangerous. Most injuries happen during wintertime. For safety reasons, our school rule must be that snow stays on the ground – no snowballs, kicking snow or any other activity with snow or ice that could be harmful, including sliding on slopes.

Thank you for taking the time to reinforce these safety rules with your children.
