NOTE: You have about 15 minutes to do this quiz, so pace yourself!
Name: ______________________
1. (18 points) See figure. A ball is thrown horizontally with initial velocity v0 = 25
m/s, from the roof of a building a h = 65 m tall. It lands on the ground, a distance d
from the base of the building. (Hint: A ball thrown horizontally has no initial
vertical velocity component! That is vy0 = 0 because θ0 = 0!)
a. Compute the time it takes the ball to hit the ground.

b. Compute the horizontal distance d from the base of the building at which the ball lands.
c. Compute the vertical (y component) of velocity vy just before the ball hits the ground.
What was its horizontal (x component) of velocity vx at that same time?
2.
(12 points) See figure. An airplane is traveling horizontally with a constant velocity v = 550
km/h in a direction 35º West of North. (Conversion from km/h to m/s is isn’t necessary to solve
this problem! Hint: Constant velocity obviously means zero acceleration!)
a. Find the components of the velocity vector in the Northerly (y) and Westerly
(-x) directions.
b. How far North and how far West has the plane traveled after a time t = 1.7 h?
θ = 35º
