Spike Lee Delivers Timely Message at MCC
Filmmaker Spike Lee was greeted with a
standing ovation from a capacity crowd of
more than 1,500 people gathered for the 2005
Mott Community College Ballenger "Eminent
Persons" Lecture Series on April 4. Lee's
appearance served as the official kickoff reestablishing MCC's Ballenger Lecture Series.
Lee gave the diverse audience a rousing
address that stressed the value of education
and the importance of choosing long-term
career happiness over money. Lee also discussed the lack of African-American representation and negative images in the media.
Encouraging college students in the audience
to use their college years to discover what it is
they would really enjoy doing, he advised:
"Use this time to plot where you want to go - once you decide what you want to do."
He urged young people to look for career satisfaction over money, warning them against becoming one
of the millions of people who get up and go to a job everyday that they hate. "Your time in school
should be about finding what it is that you love and not "what's going to make me the most money."

anniversary of Region V which was started here
at MCC. The students competed in 46 different
science events, including events in chemistry,
physics, biology, engineering, astronomy, geology, map reading, computer use and weather.
The event was organized by Co-Directors

Lt. Governor Cherry Visits
Mott Community College
Lt. Governor John D. Cherry was on campus to discuss the final
report of the Commission on Higher Education and Economic Growth at a
public meeting held April 19 in the Prahl College Center Ballroom.
Representatives from the Flint Community Schools Board of Education,
Congress of Flint School Administrators, United Teachers of Flint,
Inc./MEA/NEA and UAW Local 59, as well as MCC trustees, administrators, faculty/staff were in attendance. Cherry highlighted key recommendations outlined in the report, including: universal higher education; a new
high school assessment to replace MEAP; a culture of entrepreneurship
through community college and university entrepreneurial degree and certificate programs; a statewide "Transfer Wizard" website to improve the
transfer process; an increase in post baccalaureate professionals, encouraging dual degrees and expanding dual enrollment.
Cherry noted that MCC programs were already ahead of the curve in
comparison to other institutions, particularly with dual enrollment. "Right
here at MCC is the best example: Mott Middle College. You're not only
succeeding at K-12 challenges, but inspiring students to pursue postsecondary education."
Donut Do It!
Fans of the popular television crime drama CSI were right at
home with a five-week contest at the MCC Fitness Center. Players
teamed up with another "investigator" to determine what "crime" was
committed and who did it. Each week, new clues were found in the
Fitness Center to be examined by team members after completing their
regular workouts. During the final week, participants filed "official"
CSI reports and winners were eligible for special prizes. Winners were
announced at a Fitness Center celebration on April 21. Highlighting
the day was the announcement of the suspect, Shawn "Sugar Daddy"
Brown, MCC assistant baseball coach, who allegedly has been operating an illegal doughnut lab over the Fitness Center. Fitness Center staff
said Brown could be sentenced to numerous workouts in the Fitness
Center. Faculty and staff are welcome to join the Fitness Center and
take part in our special events while getting a great workout. Call
(810) 762-0026 for more information.
Shawn Brown, assistant baseball coach, a.k.a. “Sugar Daddy”
is booked on charges of operating an illegal doughnut lab.
MCC-Lapeer Seeks Art
Designs for Taste of
Harvest Event
MCC Lapeer Community Education is again partnering with MSU
Extension-Lapeer to sponsor the Taste of Harvest Festival on Aug. 27.
Festival organizers are seeking amateur/non-professional artists to design
artwork for Taste of Harvest Festival 2005 T-shirts. Anyone interested in
participating is encouraged to contact MCC-Lapeer at (810) 667-6546 for
applications. All entries must be received by June 1. Original artwork created by artists (15 years or older) will be considered for the winning
design that will be placed on T-shirts commemorating the Festival. A maximum of two entries per artist may be submitted. The winning artist will
receive a prize of $50. All entries must comply with the submission rules.
For the rules and more information, call the MCC Lapeer Community
Education office at (810) 667-6546.
MCC retiree Martha Van Bolt, 89, a loyal patron of the MCC
Fitness Center, also participated in the "CSI" contest. "A fitness program is very important - if you're going to aim for old age - and it
comes along. I've been exercising all my life," she said. Van Bolt
administered this advice on how to stay fit as one ages. "The only way
you can do that is to be active physically. You can't sit at home on the
Davenport and just think about it."
