UM-Flint Establishes Office at MCC
The University of Michigan-Flint is part of a growing number of four-year institutions partnering
with the MCC University Center. UM-Flint has opened an office on campus, officially becoming part
of an extended University Center. Due to space limitations in the Mott Memorial Building, the UMFlint office is located on the third floor of the MCC Library in Room 317 and is currently being
staffed by Tiffany Rohner. Office hours are 10 am to 3 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Additional details will be forthcoming. The telephone number is (810) 232-2851.
Renowned Scientist/ Author Keynote
for Ballenger Lecture in April
Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the widely acclaimed, bestseller Guns, Germs &
Steel: the Fates of Human Societies will be the keynote speaker for the spring installment of the MCC
Ballenger Lecture Series, scheduled for April 17, 2008 at 7 pm in the Ballenger Field House. This
event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Foundation for Mott Community
College at (810) 762-0425.
An American evolutionary biologist, physiologist and bio-geographer Jared Diamond works as a
professor of geography at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and is the author of
several non-fiction popular science works that combine anthropology, biology, ecology, linguistics,
genetics and history. Guns, Germs, and Steel (1998), his best known work, also won the Phi Beta
Kappa Award in Science, and discusses the downfall of some of history's greatest civilizations. His
latest book, Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed (2005), explores a range of past
civilizations and societies and examines why these societies collapsed.
Human Resources
Around Campus Staffing
Manager Sharon
Ewles tells us about a new employee in Human Resources. Ronda
Hitchcock, Supervisor – HR Services, started work on Feb. 18. Ronda
will be working in the position held by Kate Schamanek. When Kate
returns from maternity leave, she'll be working part-time with Sharon
in Staffing. Ronda, a hearty welcome to you from the MCC family!
Business Professor Barbara Schulz, supervisor of Ellen's Closet,
lets us know that Ellen's Closet had a successful year. Ellen's Closet
provides free professional attire to MCC women students. According
to the Ellen’s Closet Donation/Distribution Summary for the 2007 calendar year, the donations totaled 1,016 pieces of clothing and accessories; total distributions for 2007: 965 pieces of clothing and accessories. "During 2007, we have had more than just students come in to
receive clothing," she adds. "We recently started getting women from
the YWCA. We are glad to help anyone that may be in need of new
clothing. We have found that most of the women who come to Ellen's
Closet have no clothing when they get to the YWCA. Many students
are realizing what a wonderful program this is for them. Some students were somewhat unsure about coming in to Ellen's Closet, but
have changed their behavior once they realize that for an interview
they can get a $300 suit, which was totally outside their budget."
Here's more news from the Business Division. Dean Robert Loth
tells us that the cosmetology program has been involved in many
activities this semester. Cosmetology Instructor Andrea Blankinship
participated as a subject matter expert to review material, content, and
readability for both practical and theory State Board Exams in
Cosmetology, Nail Technology, Esthetics and Electrology in Grand
Rapids on Feb. 6 and 7. In addition, Andrea and Adjunct Esthetics
Instructor Susan Kolar were selected to review the latest edition of
the 2008 Milady Standard Cosmetology textbook. This textbook is
used nationally and will be implemented into our cosmetology program this spring semester. Acknowledgement of their participation is
recorded in the beginning pages of this textbook. Several cosmetology
students performed manicures on the participants of the annual “Wine,
Women, and Chocolate” event on Feb. 9 at Brookwood Golf Club
This function is sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of Greater
Flint. This is our second year of participation. About 18 students provided hairstyles, manicures, makeup, and eyebrow waxing to approximately 25 mothers for their annual “Pamper Day” Feb. 11 at the
Bristol Road Church of Christ “MOPS” (Mothers of Preschoolers)
program. We have participated in this event annually for the past five
years. On Feb. 14 at Grand Blanc Rehabilitation and Nursing Home
(Riverbend), 27 students provided hairstyles, manicure, and makeup
on approximately 40 residents for their annual “Valentine’s Day Ball.”
This is also an annual event that we have participated in for the past
seven years. Special groups come to our lab for services throughout
the semester for haircuts, hairstyles, and manicures. These groups are
the GISD, Jewish Federation, the Odyssey House, and various girl
scouts troops.
Interim Dean of Technology John Olson has interesting news to
share. Jerry Whitney and Fred Ashcroft are full-time instructors with
the Auto Body program at the MCC Southern Lakes Branch Center in
Fenton. This two-year program prepares students to enter the Auto
Body repair industry. A rapid growth area in the industry is restoration
of old vehicles. The Sloan Museum is giving our students a unique
opportunity to experience a real restoration project, ultimately preparing them for work in this sector of the industry. The Studebaker Club,
a group of Studebaker Car owners concerned about the future of
antique care restoration, approached MCC and offered to financially
assist us in starting an apprenticeship program, sponsoring a position
in the Restoration Shop at Sloan Museum. Jerry Whitney accompanied
John to a meeting held by the Studebaker Club at the Buick Gallery on
Saturday Feb. 23 and received a check for the restoration program.
"We hope to get other sponsorships from Clubs or Foundations to keep
the apprenticeship going," adds John. "There is a significant restoration market that needs good people. It's a great opportunity for our students. It is also great PR for MCC and its relationship to Sloan and the
Cultural Center."
Here's news from Social Sciences Dean Margaret Brainard: On
Jan. 29, the Regional Trails and Greenway Summit met at the
University of Michigan-Flint. At that summit, three awards were
given to the Trail Advocate of the Year. The honor was awarded to the
person who has done great work to promote trails in each of the three
counties of our region: Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee Counties.
Economics Prof. Stephany Diana was named Genesee County 2008
Trail Advocate of the Year for her work with the Friends of the Flint
River Trail. "Congratulations to Stef for her hard work in promoting
trails in our community!"
From March 3 – 6, John Biscoe, Adjunct Professor of Criminal
Justice and Controller/Administrator, Lapeer County, will be part of a
team from Lapeer participating in a workshop at Harvard University’s
John F. Kennedy School of Government Executive Education. The
workshop, "Community Problem-Solving: Skills for Civic Leadership"
teaches teams of community leaders the skills they need to affect deep
change. The program is designed by Harvard's John F. Kennedy
School of Government and the Community Problem-Solving Project at
MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning for key decision
makers to learn both practical skills and theoretical frameworks that
will strengthen their ability to exercise effective civic leadership
together. Congratulations to John for this prestigious opportunity.
Fine Arts Dean Jessie Sirna shares news from her area: Painting
Prof. John Dempsey has work in the exhibition "More Than Meets
the Eye" at Buckham Gallery through March 1. Please join us for an
afternoon of music Sunday, March 2 at 3 pm in the MMB Auditorium.
The MCC Choir and Chamber Singers, directed by Mary
Nieuwenhuis and the Concert Band, under the direction of Mary
Procopio will all be performing. We welcome Bruce Nieuwenhuis as
Guest Conductor along with members of his Flint Concert Band as
they join our program. As always, the concert is free and open to the
public; donations toward MCC Music Scholarships are welcome.
Ceramics Prof. Thom Bohnert, Sculpture Prof. Cate Smith, Art
Support Specialist Brian Liljeblad and part-time 3-D Design
Instructor Cristen Velliky are all represented in an exhibition,
"Surface" at the Gallery Project in Ann Arbor through March 30. This
exhibition was also curated by Cristen Velliky. The work of artist
Hubert Massey will be exhibited in the MCC Fine Arts Gallery from
Feb. 25-March 11. His show is entitled "Preliminary Sketches &
Drawings for Frescos." An exhibit featuring the works of artist
Joseph Trumpey, "Making Science Visible, Scientific Illustration,"
will be March 17-April 1 in the VADC. He will give a public presentation Tuesday, March 18 at 12 noon.
The Music Dept. hosted the 3rd Annual Jazz Festival on Friday,
Feb. 22. Organized by Jazz Studies Director Chuck Iwanusa, area
high school jazz groups were invited to attend a clinic during the day
with guest artists Dave McMurdo and Mike Malone from Mohawk
College, which is our sister college, in Hamilton, Ontario. The
evening concert included two MCC Jazz Combos, the MCC Jazz
Ensemble and the Steelheads along with a performance by the music
faculty, Chuck Iwanusa, Frank Yon, Ken Duquaine and Jim
Coviak along with our guests. The poster, card and program advertising the Jazz Festival were designed by one of our Graphic Design
students with the assistance of Graphic Design Coordinator Mara
Fulmer. The Jazz Ensemble also performed recently at the dinner for
Steve Robinson with Choral Director Mary Nieuwenhuis
performing with them.

DisAbility Services Specialist Terese O'Callaghan organized a
team of four employees from The Learning Center who bowled to
raise money for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization on
Thursday Feb. 21. Terese, who has been a big sister for years, reports
that the team raised $190 and bowled a total of 379, while having a
lot of fun. Terese was joined by Julie Dudis, Sherry Weeder and
Madonna Carpenter. We would like to issue a challenge to other
departments to put together a team for next year and we can enjoy a
little competition. If you are interested, please call Terese at 7625115 or email her at terese.ocallaghan@mcc.edu. Adds Terese: "Next
January we can put together some additional teams to help this very
worthy organization."
HR Staffing Manager Sharon Ewles tells us that Chief Human
Resources Officer Mark Kennedy has been selected to receive the
Excellence in Human Resource Management Practices Award. The
award, which will be presented on March 17 in Chicago, is sponsored
by the Midwest College and University Professional Association for
Human Resources (CUPA-HR Midwest Region). The region consists
of 395 higher education institutions located within 12 states and one
Canadian province. This award honors the achievements of a human
resource department or a specific HR professional within a

worked to improve the quality of programs and services through
effective human resource administrative practices, used creative
application of human resource principles, provided strong leadership
or directions, and/or be recognized within the institution or by peers
as providing an outstanding HR program. Congratulations, Mark!

AARP Forum to Benefit "50+
Worker" at MCC March 12
MCC Continuing Education is teaming up with AARP Michigan and
the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth in presenting a
free informational forum that will provide a comprehensive look at opportunities for employers and workers at age 50 and beyond. The forum,
"Work at 50-Plus: New Age of Possibility and Purpose" will be Wednesday,
March 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the MCC Events Center, adjacent to
the Mott Library. This event is free and open to the public.
Registration for the program and a continental breakfast are scheduled from
8 to 8:45 am. Space is limited, so please call 1-877-926-8300 to register.
Findings from AARP research suggest the number of workers age 50
and older is increasing. According to estimates provided by AARP, nearly
20 percent of the workforce will be age 55 and older in 2012, an increase
from 13 percent in 2000. In addition, 68 percent of workers over the age of
50, who have not yet retired, say they plan to work in some capacity into
their retirement years or not retire at all.
For more information about AARP and 50+ workers, visit the website at
www.aarp.org/money/careers.
What’s New @ www.mcc.edu
The www.mcc.edu website is continually updated in order to maintain fresh, up-to-date information and to better serve our many web users.
Following is a list of updates and improvements.
The Management Information Systems Help Desk has a new web
page which is accessible from the Faculty/Staff keypath. Links are provided for downloading frequently needed programs including Adobe
Reader, Adobe Flash Player and the Office 2007 converter. This page
provides an excellent outline for the types of issues that the Help Desk
can address. There are also easy links for COGNOS Job Aids, Email
Tutorials and Tips and Telecom Instructions.
The Telecom Instructions page has also been updated with illustrations of the various types of phone sets used at Mott Community College.
It is much easier to select the telephone that looks like the unit on your
desk than to try to remember the numeric name for your phone.
The Faculty/Staff page was rearranged to make it easier to find information. The top tabs are sorted according to Faculty Resources,
Divisions and Departments, Information, Educational Systems, and Job
Aids. The second section contains all of the links for Management
Information Systems including off-campus access to your email and the
secure log-in page. The bottom section is titled Communications
Resource Center. Access to the Directory, Events Calendar and emergency numbers are conveniently located together.
Also, please remember, each web page has a “Page Change” button.
This feature allows immediate communication to add, clarify or revise
information. Input from our web users on this MIS page, or any other
web page, is always appreciated.
Full-time Faculty Job
Opportunities
The Office of Human Resources will be posting several fulltime faculty positions within the near future. Once the postings are
open, faculty and staff will be notified via the campus-wide email
