MCC Trustee Elected National
Association Officer
Mott Community College Trustee Celia M. Turner was elected
National Treasurer at the 40th Annual Association of Community
College Trustees (ACCT) Leadership Conference recently in
California. As Treasurer, Turner will serve on the national ACCT
Board of Directors and is likely to rise through board officer positions to become national president in the future. In 2007, Celia
Turner had been elected to the ACCT Board of Directors as a
Delegate-at-Large.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for Mott College as well as the
community of Flint and Genesee County," said MCC President Dick
Shaink. "Being on the national scene allows Trustee Turner to have
direct input on national programs and federal legislation as well as
bringing inside information back to our community. She will be a
valuable asset during this difficult time of economic transition."
Turner has served on the MCC Board of Trustees since being
first elected in 2003 and then re-elected in 2009. She is a retired consignment operation coordinator
with General Motors Service Parts Operations.
Ms. Turner received a Master's Degree in Administration (1994) and a Bachelor's Degree in
Business Administration (1992) from Central Michigan University. She is a graduate of Flint Central
High School. An active member of her community, Ms. Turner is involved with numerous organizations and activities. She is a Board Member of the Light of the World Foundation, a Board Member of
the Michigan Senior Network Service Agency, an Executive Board Member and Co-Chair of the
UNCF Flint Branch, and an Executive Board Member of the NAACP. In 2001, Ms. Turner was a
recipient of the YWCA of Greater Flint Corporate Women of Achievement Award for General Motors
Service Parts Operations World Headquarters in Grand Blanc.
The Association of Community College Trustees is a non-profit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200
community, technical, and junior colleges in the United States serving over 11 million students annually.
Outstanding Employee of the Month
Lisa Poma, Executive Assistant, Office of the President,
has been selected as the Outstanding Employee of the Month
for September 2009.
Lisa was described as "constantly going above and
beyond," whether it is coordinating the President's busy schedule, using her superior writing skills to help draft and fine tune
letters and other documents, compiling and distributing the
weekly information packets to the Board of Trustees or serving
admirably as the unofficial goodwill ambassador for the
President's Office by listening to the concerns of students and parents who call or visit that office.
It was also noted that Lisa is involved in the College's Emergency Response Team, Friends of the
Mott Library and the Green Initiatives Team (GRIT). Recently, Lisa assisted President Shaink by serving as a Facilitator/Trainer during the 21st Century Community Challenge as well as helping to develop
several of the program's training materials. She was presented with a balloon bouquet, a $50 Target gift
card and a framed certificate of appreciation. Congratulations, Lisa!

MCC Dental Clinic Named
to Honor Dr. Richard Shick
MCC's Dental Hygiene Clinic has been named for Flint's fluoride
pioneer Richard A. Shick, D.D.S., M.S., and his wife, Rose Marie,
commemorating his personal and professional leadership both in the
field of dentistry at Mott Community College his alma mater.
Dr. Shick provided a significant lead gift towards the college's $3million Endowment Growth Initiative. He was named Distinguished
Alumni of Mott Community College in 2007 and also has served as
chair of the Foundation for Mott Community College's Board of
Directors. The Shicks donated their gift to the Dental Assisting and
Dental Hygiene programs for improvements to the clinic where students are trained on the latest technology associated with dentistry.
Dr. Shick received his Associate in Science from Flint Junior
College in 1949. He went on to earn a D.D.S. and M.S. in
Periodontics at The University of Michigan. He was the Co-Chair of
two successful fluoridation referendums for the City of Flint in 1965
and 1966, and Initiated Health Education Research projects in Flint
Schools that resulted in six published reports. Dr. Shick also was
chair of the committee that initiated Dental Assisting and Dental
Hygiene programs for MCC. In 1993, he lead the initiative to move
the Dental Hygiene Clinic from the Mott Children’s Health Clinic to
MCC's main campus in Flint. He has received many awards for his
commitment to dentistry and was named Citizen of the Year in Grand
Blanc in 2002. Previously he has served as President of the Genesee
District Society, Michigan Dental Association and First Vice President
of the American Dental Association. Currently, Dr. Shick is serving
as President of the International College of Dentists and his wife,
Rose Marie, has been traveling the world with him.
"Naming the Dental Hygiene Clinic for Dr. and Mrs. Shick is a
perfect tribute to the generosity and commitment that they have
shown to this school and to the students who attend here," said
Lennetta Coney, President of the Foundation for Mott Community
College. "We are grateful for their contributions on every level."
A plaque honoring the Shicks has been placed just outside the
clinic, located on the second floor of the Mott Memorial Building,
and their names have been added to a wall overlooking the students as
they work.
Global Issues Film Festival
MCC, Kettering University and UM-Flint will once again
partner to host films of wide ranging topics from around the world
for the eighth annual Global Issues Film Festival. MCC kicks off the
first half of the festival Saturday and Sunday Nov. 14 and 15 with
four films to be shown in the Regional Technology Center (RTC)
Auditorium. Special guest featured this year is Flint native Michael
Ramsdell, producer of the film The Anatomy of Hate; A Dialogue to
Hope. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
Three films will be screened on Saturday, Nov. 14 and one film
will be shown on Sunday, Nov. 15. The festival opens with the film
Garbage Warrior (2007) at 1 pm on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1pm. This
film is set in Taos, New Mexico. Renegade architect Michael
Reynolds has been developing "Earthship Biotecture" for over 30
years. Reynolds' vision for energy-independent housing and New
Mexico's laws begin a multi-year battle; meanwhile, Mother Nature
is sending tsunamis and hurricanes to people who need good, basic
housing now.
Visit Sri Lanka and see two women who join the Tamil Tigers
as trained terrorists at the 3 pm Saturday, Nov. 14 showing of My
Daughter the Terrorist (2007) filmed by Beate Arnestad and produced by Morten Daae. This even-handed documentary shows the
reasons behind the bloody struggle while still questioning the tactics
used.
End day one of the festival with the 5 pm showing of Arusi
Persian Wedding (2005). Planning a wedding is difficult in the best
of circumstances. When a couple adds the complication of mixed
cultures, long-lost family members, and long travel the story gets
even more interesting. The wedding is to be held in Iran. The
political struggle of both countries adds an interesting backdrop to
this real family story.
Sunday marks the festival highlight with the 3 pm screening of
The Anatomy of Hate; A Dialogue of Hope (2008). Michael
Ramsdell worked to achieve unprecedented access to some of the
most venomous ideologies and violent conflicts of our time.
Ramsdell turns his camera to Iraq, Israel, the Palestinian territory,
and even to hate groups in the US. Following the film Ramsdell will
take questions and share the challenges involved in making this
unique film.
The Global Issues Film Festival is sponsored by the Greater
Flint Arts Council, the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural
Affairs, Mott Community College, Kettering University's
Department of Liberal Studies and the University of Michigan-Flint.
The second half of the festival will run Jan. 27-30, 2010 at Kettering
University. For more information, call 232-2554.
Works of MCC Fine Arts Professor
Featured in Fine Arts Gallery
An exhibit of photographs by Fine Arts Division Dean and Photographer Mary Cusack titled Bright Lights, Big Cities will be in the Fine Arts
Gallery from Monday, Nov. 9 through Tuesday, Nov. 24. In addition, Cusack will give a presentation about her work on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 1 pm in
the Visual Arts and Design Center, room 129. These events, made possible in part by The Ballenger Trust, are free and open to the public.
Mary Cusack's exhibition experience includes "24"Ours, December 2008 - January 2009, Buckham Gallery, Flint; Social Discourse: An Arts
Experience, June - July 2008, Studio 1210, Lansing, and Industrial Pulchritude, February 2004, Lansing Art Gallery, Lansing. She is also a member
of the Board of Directors for Lansing Art Gallery.
Her artist statement reads in part as follows: "My interest in photography has always been self-serving. Public admiration and patronage are
nice, but my motivation is to take pictures which are aesthetically pleasing to me. Of course, I am thrilled when people enjoy my work, but rest
assured, how an audience might react is furthest from my mind when I point and shoot."
"I am a capture-oriented photographer. Even in the bygone era of film photography, I never stepped foot in a darkroom. That part of the
process held zero interest for me. Isolating a moment in place and time, capturing unique light, color and pattern, memorializing a feeling, tone or
atmosphere -- those are the things that interest me."
The Fine Arts Gallery is located in the Visual Arts and Design Center. Gallery hours are 9 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. The public is
always welcome. For more information, call the MCC Art and Design Office at (810) 762-0443.
