Community Joins MCC in Honoring
MCC Basketball Coach Steve Schmidt
A host of community leaders joined Mott Community College in saluting MCC Men's Head
Basketball Coach Steve Schmidt in a ceremony held June 24 at MCC.
On April 30, 2010, Schmidt, the "winningest coach in MCC history," was inducted into the
National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men's Basketball Coaches Association Hall of
Fame, adding to a collection
of awards and honors
received for his commitment
to not only coaching, but
helping to shape the lives and
future careers of student-athletes.
"It's hard to describe,"
Schmidt stated when he
learned of his induction into
the Hall of Fame. "The fact of
the matter is that I have not
won a single game by myself.
I have been assisted by loyal
coaches and talented and dedicated players. All of this is
possible because of them –
and that is a perspective I've

inducted to the NJCAA Basketball Coach Hall of Fame.
Recognized for setting
the standards for teams, on
and off the court, Schmidt was presented with a key to the city of Flint from Mayor Dayne Walling (his
second key to the city), as well as proclamations from the Flint City Council and Genesee County
Board of Commissioners. Proclamations from Gov. Jennifer Granholm, and from a host of legislators
representing Michigan, including Congressman Dale Kildee, were also presented to the coach at the
reception.
Steve Schmidt became MCC's Head Men's Basketball Coach in 1991. With an unwavering
commitment to excellence, he has shaped the program into one of the nation's most recognized and successful programs. He has led the team to three National Championships. After winning the first national
championship in 2003, the Bears won two more national titles back-to-back in 2007 and 2008. He also
received National Coach of the Year honors each of those years.
Schmidt has coached and helped develop three national players of the year and 15 All-Americans.
He currently holds the record for the highest winning percentage in national tournament history. In
addition to his induction in the NJCAA Hall of Fame, he is a 2006 inductee of the Greater Flint Area
Hall of Fame. In 2009, Mott Community College named the gymnasium at Ballenger Field House the
Steve Schmidt Gymnasium.
"Our success comes from the support we get from MCC," said Schmidt, receiving a standing
ovation from an enthusiastic crowd of supporters gathered in the Applewood Café. "I'm just one
person – part of a team. We're truly a family.
"The reason I coach is because of the players," added Schmidt. I couldn't do this without the
players. That's what it's really all about for me – to make a positive impact. I truly care about our
players and they are with with me for the rest of my life."

Robert Matthews Among
Volunteers Recognized
by Governor Granholm
Robert Matthews, Executive Dean, MCC Workforce
Development, was among finalists for the 2010 Governor's Service
Awards. The Governor's Service Awards are presented annually to
individuals, businesses, and organizations to acknowledge their
commitment to solving community issues through volunteerism.
Recipients were selected from finalists in eight award categories.
More than 130 nominations were submitted. Matthews was nominated
for the Mentor of the Year Award for his tireless efforts with the
Esquire Mentoring and Leadership Program, a mentoring program
established to help at-risk high school males.
"Michigan's volunteers give of their time and talent without
thought of praise or recognition," said Governor Jennifer Granholm
in a news release announcing the winners of the 2010 Governor's
Service Awards. Volunteers are making a real difference in their
communities. Recognizing them for their efforts is a simple way of
thanking them for their commitment to service and honoring their
accomplishments across the state."
Although Matthews did not win the award, he was honored to
have been nominated.
"I don't help the youth to be in the spotlight," Matthews said.
"I like to mentor and part of it comes from growing up in the Flint
community and seeing that young people need extra support."
MCC Offers Youth Chance
to Explore Creativity at
Free Camp
A novel summer camp experience giving youth an opportunity to
explore their creative side is being offered by Mott Community
College again this year.
MCC's Creative Expressions Camp provides a variety of creative
writing activities for students in grades 4 to 8, at all skill levels. The
camp will meet from 8 am to 12 noon, Monday to Thursday, July 19
to July 22, 2010 in designated classrooms of the Curtice-Mott
Complex. The camp, which is being sponsored by the Foundation for
Mott Community College and the James A. Welch Foundation, is free.
Camp sessions will be led by MCC faculty and students. Supplies,
equipment and snacks will also be furnished by MCC. Themes for this
year's camp will include learning PowerPoint to present poetry and
speeches, a journalism session to put together a "newspaper" and a
fantasy/supernatural-themed session.
"The purpose of the camp is to get children excited about creative
writing and to help them build confidence as writers," said Jackie
Knoll, Creative Expressions Camp Coordinator and MCC English
Instructor. "The response from children and parents who have
participated in the camp in the past has been very enthusiastic."
The group will meet in Room CM-2121 of the Curtice-Mott
Complex each morning at 8 am before heading off to the different
sessions. Campers can be picked up at the same location each day at
12 noon. A special presentation for students to showcase their projects
is scheduled to take place from 4 to 6 pm Thursday, July 22, with a
location to be announced. For more information or to register, call
Jackie Knoll at (810) 232-2363, email Jackie.Knoll@mcc.edu or call
the MCC Humanities Division office at (810) 762-0470.
Guitar build workshop
with MCC faculty/staff
and K-12 district teachers
a notable success
Workshop Electric Guitar Build Teachers from Davison, Linden,
Fenton, Lake Fenton, Flushing and Swartz Creek spent four intense days
with MCC Faculty and staff building an electric guitar as part of a
National Science Foundation (NSF) project focused on Product Lifecycle
Management (PLM) and Comprehensive Design. The NSF project team
includes Purdue University, Sinclair Community College (Dayton, OH),
Butler County Community College (Butler, PA), Fox Valley Tech. College
(Appleton, WI) and MCC. The team developed curriculum products that
reinforce the use of 3D digital data in the product development process – a
strategy widely embraced by business and industry across many sectors
including automotive, defense, aerospace, alternative energy and more.
The guitar workshop piloted the NSF/PLM curriculum products, discussed
Design for Assembly and Manufacturing requirements and introduced
Sustainable Design practices. It also required a lot of elbow-grease as participants sanded, fit, glued and assembled components. The measure for a
successful "build" is a tuned guitar by the end of the fourth day. The
Regional Technology Initiatives office represents the college in the NSF
project under its emerging technology mission to address state-of-the-art
technology and practices.
