Resolution 3-11-F.
Resolution to Support the Downing University Center name to be changed
to Downing Student Union as part of the DUC Renovation process.
PURPOSE:
For the Student Government Association of Western Kentucky University to
support the Downing University Center name to be changed to Downing Student
Union as part of the Downing University Center renovation process.
WHEREAS: As a student initiated and integrated renovation project, the newly revamped
building has envisioned the Western Kentucky University student body
throughout each step of the planning process. Downing Student Union embodies
the three leading goals of the renovation project for the building: Wow Factor,
Social Heart, and Branding. The new name will do justice to the purpose the new
building will serve.
WHEREAS: Our benchmark universities call our “University Center” their “Student Unions.”
The majority of our administrative offices are in other campus buildings, and the
purpose of the building is to serve the students –whether to socialize, shop, or
study. A student union is the correct, appropriate term for the building’s function.
WHEREAS: After two years of construction zones, this will add to the new era for DUC. A
fresh name will match the fresh look and feel of the building. This will enhance
Western Kentucky University’s image, competiveness, and appeal not only to
future students, but to staff, alumni, and the community overall.
WHEREAS: As the primary source of funding, the students reserve the sole right to decide the
name of the renovated University Center building. Representing our peers, we
should seize this opportunity to emphasize a permanent student influence on the
building.

changed to Downing Student Union as part of the DUC Renovation
process.
