Minutes from St. Barbara Parent Engagement Council Meeting
September 16, 2014
Welcome Isabel Reis
Agenda Approval – Jennifer Cazabon and Lorraine DeMedeiros
Approval of June 2014 Minutes - Jennifer Cazabon and Karen Fillier
Principal Conversation – Ms. Taccone
512 student for 2014/2015 year, down from 542 from last year. Met kindergarten
projections.
Two new ECEs in two of the three kindergarten classrooms. Two classes have 26 students
with one Teacher and ECE and one class with one teacher.
Need planning time teacher for three days per week.
Curriculum focus is math and physical education. Intermural teams.
Focus on mental well being and anxiety. Have new Child Youth Worker who will interact with
students at recess.
EQAO – Satisfied with the results. Lowest score was 51% in Junior math at level 3/4, 30%
at level 2. Reading at 84% and Writing 83%.
Primary Results: Level 3/4 – Reading 76%, Writing 75%, Math 71% up from 59%.
Professional Learning will focus on Junior Division Math.
Full Day Learning Classes: will use diagnostic study by Western University to determine if
child will have future challenges in math.
Pro Grant: $1000, applied in April and approved. Will be used in two areas: healthy habits
(interactive presentations on eating and physical activity) and Internet Safety (how to use
the internet productively).
Open House: September 25, 2014 6:00-7:00 pm. Meet and greet in classrooms.
Volunteer and Daycare tables in lobby. Youth Police Officer, Constable Craig will attend.
Trustee may attend. Analyphyxics Canada presentation in the gym at 7:15 pm for
community and teachers. (WOW Butter not allowed in schools by the Board).
St. John Ambulance Courses offered at the school on PA Day. Home Alone and Babysitting
courses. $59 each from 8:30 am -3:30 pm.
District Review Process – On November 20, 2014. Ministry requirement done on a five year
cycle. Opportunity to brag about our school with student voice, parents and teachers.
Three parts: presentations, classroom visits and written report.
Anti Spam Legislation: no email communications from school to home until direction
received from the Board.
Treasurer’s Report – Lorraine DeMedeiros
As of August 31, 2014: $1786.74 in bank. Skate night will cost $394.97. Need to pay for
Dance A Thon.
OAPCE – Letizia Ripandelli
Call To Action – emails will be forwarded to interested individuals. Let Letizia know your
email address.
Community Communication
One page flyer about Council to be given out at Open House. Colour at Open House and
black and white copy to go home with youngest sibling.
Parish Update – Geena Immanuel
Father Russell Ash is our new priest. Grade 8 Confirmation registration in September.
Activities and Updates
Dance A Thon: On Friday October 31, Kick Off on Friday October 10. Will give the students
the choice to wear costumes. Early Bird Raffles: balls, MuchMusic T-shirts, Itune cards.
Prizes: IPad Mini, Kobo, IPod Touch, headphones (Jenn will speak to her contact), scooters.
Skate Night: Wednesday January 7, 2015 at Meadowvale 4 Rinks, 6:00-8:00 pm. $394.97,
insurance included.
