Study the Picture…
Why is the font placed at the bottom of the
image?
Font Size and Color: The
font is placed at the
bottom of the image
because it holds less
importance than the
subject, herself. It’s
written in white and is
slightly smaller , where it
won’t draw as much
attention.
What is the emphasis (focal point) in
the picture?
• Focal Point: The
emphasis in the picture
is focused on Terri’s
physical appearance
and the questioning of
why her finger is placed
on her throat. The
viewer is left in
curiosity of the
significance of her
thumb position.
What if another person was placed in this
image? Would it still have the same effect?
Detail: The company
places Terri as the main
focus because more
viewers play attention to
her because of her unique
physical appearance. If
another person was placed
in the image, it wouldn’t
have as great of effect.
Viewers are curious and
want to know more about
her.
Who is the image directed towards?
• The image is directed towards current smokers
and possible teenage smokers. She is trying to
warn others about the possible effects of
continued tobacco use. She wants them to
understand the consequences and what she
has had to face.
What is the PATHOS
(emotional appeal) in the image?
The emotional appeal makes the viewer feel
sorrow and forces them to realize the possible
effects of tobacco usage. Her physical
appearance draws in more of an audience
because she is not considered a “social norm.”
The viewer feels empathy and places
themselves into her shoes, as a smoker who
had to receive a tracheotomy.
What is the ETHOS
(ethical appeal) in the image?
• The ethical appeal is that the picture
originated from the Center for Disease
Prevention and Control. It is part of the
Former Smoker Campaign.
What is the LOGOS
(logical appeal) in the image?
• The logical appeal interpreted is not to smoke
tobacco or participate in tobacco-related
activities. Human nature makes us not want to
endure the consequences of what others
[Terri] has had to face because of decisions
that could have been easily avoided based on
personal decisions.
