President’s Corner
As the 2011-12 school year progresses, we as a PTO are continually making
changes to our communication procedures. Our most recent change will be
sending out important information, events and upcoming deadlines via our own
email database. In order to make sure these emails are not placed in your spam
folders, please take a few moments to add the following email addresses to you
email contacts:
slptopresident@gmail.com(Lora Rampino)
slptotreasurer1@gmail.com (Marie Sonnentag)
slptovicepresident@gmail.com (Nina Handeland)
slptosecretary@gmail.com (Caroline Buckland)
We hope that these changes will help our communication with all Spencer Loomis
families. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the board
members via the above listed emails. Thanks and we hope you have a Happy
Thanksgiving!

Spirit Wear Update
Box Tops
All items from the Holiday Spirit Wear
Order, with the exception of the hooded
sweatshirts should arrive at school
during week commencing Monday,
December 5th. There has been a delay
on the sweatshirts, they will be
delivered in mid- December, before we
go on winter break. Once the items
have arrived, unless you specified on
your order form that the items were
gifts, they will go home with students
via your child’s backpack. Any
questions, please contact Denise Rasbid
via email denise.cqc@comcast.net or
cell 720-480-3512.
Box Tops & Labels for Education
collections will continue on the third
Friday of every month throughout this
school year. The collections for the
months of November, December and
January will go towards a class contest –
results of which will be reported at the
end of January. The class results will
be displayed monthly in the cafetorium
so the children can see how their class
is doing. Each classroom has its own
collection box, so children can bring
their labels into school at any time
during the month or year. Please
continue to collect and ask friends and
family to collect to support our school
too.
Enrichment Awards
The Enrichment Awards Committee has
already completed two rounds of
awards this year. During the September
meeting, $3006.05 was approved, and
during the November meeting $787.50
was approved.
The Enrichment Awards are financed by
the fundraising efforts of the PTO
volunteers; of course, these efforts
depend on the participation of Spencer
Loomis families! Enrichment Awards
are an opportunity for teachers to
request funds for innovative ideas which
benefit our children. All parents
attending the PTO meeting vote for
each request; a simple majority is
required for it to pass.
Some of the awards approved so far this
year are:
K – Jolly Phonics for the smart board.
K-2 - Inflatable seat cushions to help
students focus.
1st - Ten science videos
3rd – Language Arts materials to enrich
RTI focus groups.
4th – Human body, skeleton and heart
models.
K-5 – One copy of “The Cricket in Time
Square” for all families to participate in
the One School One Book program, with a
kick-off assembly in January.
Any questions, please contact Cathy
Danial via email tpond@sbcglobal.net or
phone 847-540-8455.

Art Parent Update
Students kicked off the year trying out
Gesture Drawing, a technique for
building drawing skills by quickly
capturing the general sense of
action/personality of a figure or object.
This is a different approach than
contour drawing, and the students had a
great time capturing the gesture of both
objects and figures in action with vine
charcoal. In November/December, we
are looking at the ancient art of Native
American Sand painting, its symbolism
and purposes, and students are making
their own “sand paintings” using pencils
and pastels on sandpaper. Art Parents –
mark your calendars for our next
training meeting on Monday, January 9th
at 9.30am in the Art Room. We will be
training on the January Doodle for the
Google project as well as the
February/March Deborah Butterfield’s
Horses project. Any questions, please
contact Dixie Swartwood via email
dixieswartwood@yahoo.com.

these deals via email to our families,
supporters, friends and neighbors.
Each time you take advantage of a daily

you already love to do. It’s FREE to join
and there’s never any obligation to buy
a deal.
You can support the “Smart Schools.
Bright Futures.” campaign by signing up
