READI
NG
In Section IV and V of
the Literacy Preparation
Workbook, you will be
reading two different
kinds of selections.
You will then be required
to answer multiple choice
questions and to write
some paragraph
answers.
Let’s begin on page on
page 39…
LET’S REVIEW SOME TIPS
BEFORE YOU BEGIN…

Prepare in advance by reading ALL the
Multiple
Choice questions (p. 40)

Have a highlighter ready to mark
important information as you read the text
It is important to know that for this
Section of the test, you will be looking at
visual material such as graphs, charts,
diagrams or graphics.
EXAMINE CAREFULLY
CHECKING YOUR WORK
After you have read the text and highlighted
it, re-read the multiple choice questions and
answer them carefully


Once you have decided on your answer, go
back to the text and, where possible, highlight or
put a check mark where
you got your answer
Now let’s try reading the
text on pages 41 and 42…
“Trump Investments”
And answering the
questions that follow
IN THIS
SECTION YOU
ARE REQUIRED
TO WRITE
PARAGRAPHS
So…let’s review
some of the tips
for writing short
answer
responses.
WRITING A SHORT PARAGRAPH
ALWAYS, whenever possible, try to repeat
part of the question in your opening sentence.
Turn the question into a statement.
Question 7:
What evidence can you find in this
selection that
shows that Donald Trump
has a great deal of
persistence and
determination?
Becomes:
Throughout the selection, there is
evidence which shows that Donald Trump
has a great deal of persistence and
Question 8:
Use information in this selection and
your own ideas to explain what Trump
means when he says, “When people see the
beautiful marble in Trump Tower, they
usually
have no idea what I went
through personally
to achieve end
results.”
Becomes:
What Trump means in the quote above
is that
he has worked hard to get
to where he is now.
YOU SHOULD NOT START TO GIVE
THE WRITE STUFF

Use the Rough Notes section at
the bottom of
the page to organize
your ideas

Try to fill up the lines provided but
do not go over

After your opening statement, try
to include three (3) reasons, examples,
or ideas to support your answer

Re-read your answers carefully.
Remember that your target audience is
an adult marking your response

Check for possible spelling,
punctuation, or other grammatical
errors

When you are asked to SUMMARIZE your
reading, then you must decide what the entire
reading/article was about.
For example, if you read a story about Wayne
Gretzky, you would have to decide what the overall
point was about the story and turn this into your
opening statement.
Ie. The main idea of the story was that Wayne
Gretzky has not always had an easy life.
THEN you would fill your paragraph with reasons
to support your opening sentence.
