2016 Essay Contest Rules
Essay Topic (5th and 6th Graders):
Imagine a world without hate. What would it look like?
Essay Topic (7th and 8th Graders):
Identify a current day hero or hero from history who stood up for something he or she believed in. Reflect
on that individual’s moral courage.
Contest Rules:
• All entries must be postmarked by April 29, 2016.
• No Place for Hate teacher/sponsor/facilitators may send all the entries from their schools to the ADL.
• All written entries must be original work and under 750 words. Essays must be either typed (preferred) or legibly
written in ink. The student’s name and school should appear on every page of the essay.
• A completed entry form should be paper-clipped or stapled to each essay.
• Each entry must be the original work of a student. Adults may give verbal assistance, but they may not add to the
writing.
Contest Terms:
• Submissions become property of the Anti-Defamation League. Through submission of essays, legal guardians grant
non-exclusive reproduction and publication rights to the works submitted. Submissions will not be returned.
• All entries must be postmarked by April 29, 2016. ADL is not responsible for entries that are late or lost in the mail.
Entries postmarked after the deadline will not be included in the contest or returned.
• Winners will be notified and announced no later than the end of May 2016. A list of the finalists and winning entries
may be posted on the Anti-Defamation League’s website.
• This contest is offered only to eligible students and is void wherever this contest is prohibited by law. This contest is
subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations and will be governed by the laws of Pennsylvania.
Any and all legal actions or claims arising in connection with this contest must be brought in a court of competent
jurisdiction within Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
• The judges will be chosen representatives of ADL. The decision of the judges shall be made in the judges’ full discretion
and is final. Challenges will not be permitted.
• Through submission of essays, entrants and legal guardians expressly release and hold harmless Anti-Defamation
League and TD Bank from and against any claim, liability, loss, injury, cost or damage arising from or relating to the
contest, including claims of negligence.
• Winners and their legal guardians may be required to sign a liability release, publicity release and affidavit of eligibility.
Judging:
There are two judging divisions for the contest:
• Division I (Grade 5 – Grade 6)
• Division II (Grade 7 – Grade 8)
• Entries will be judged on topic development, creativity, originality, quality of writing, and adherence to rules.
Prizes will be awarded in the following ways:
• 2 Grand Prizes ($250 TD Bank VISA® Gift Card) - One in each Division
• 2 Runner-Up Prizes ($50 TD Bank VISA® Gift Card) - One in each Division
