Course Description and Requirements:
This course provides in-depth experiences designed to refine and further develop the techniques
and skills needed by professionals working with young children. Participating as a teacher
assistant provides higher-level experience in applying principles of child guidance and classroom
management. Creating a center, portfolio revision development and directing a culminating
project are additional requirements. Students are responsible for providing some supplies and
materials.
Prerequisite:
Successful completion of the Child Development/The Preschool Years, Preschool Laboratory 1
and teacher recommendation.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Be able to identify the connection between theory and practice in a quality preschool
child development laboratory.
2. Identify the elements that contribute to a responsive, inclusive, diverse early childhood
environment.
3. Apply principles of child development to the observation and documentation of a young
child’s thinking and behavior using DAP in the areas of art, reading, music, structured
learning…
4. Use your own knowledge and other resources (internet, resource cart…) to design,
implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum to promote positive
outcomes.
5. Demonstrate a disposition to be a continuous, collaborative learner.
6. Know how to use developmental knowledge to create healthy, respectful, supportive
learning environments.
7. Integrate practices that facilitate partnerships with preschool families (documentation
panel, weekly newsletter, and “little buddy” progress reports…)
8. Revise a professional portfolio that will be continuously developed within your
educational classes.
9. Develop the ability to reflect critically on yourself as a person and a professional, and on
the work you will do.
10. Identify and begin to conduct yourself as a member of the early childhood profession.
