THEME OF THE WEEK
Attendance
I am really concerned that our attendance is just not getting any better.
Nunthorpe expects a minimum of 95% attendance from every single person.
You don’t always NEED to stay off when you don’t feel 100%; you should only be absent if you have
something infectious (eg chicken pox), are vomiting or literally cannot stand up. It is not acceptable to have
time off for coughs, colds, flu bugs, toothache or anything else. If in doubt, come into school and we will
send you home if necessary. Medical appointments should ALWAYS be made outside of school time; doctors
and dentists are normally happy to accommodate this. The only exception should be hospital appointments,
which often cannot be changed. Holidays will also only be authorised in extreme circumstances; otherwise
your parents (each parent and per child) can expect to receive a £60 fine.
Remember: 10% drop in attendance = 1 grade at GCSE.
Get your tutor to check your attendance: is it 95% or better? If not, why not?
This week’s tutorial
Today’s period 3 is in year groups – please make sure you all know where you are going. Mr Pendlington
and I will be checking every room to ensure there are no stragglers – you cannot just decide to go with
your friends! Years 7-10 will be focusing on aspects of safety and also anti-social behaviour around
Halloween, Mischief Night and Bonfire Night. Year 11 will be working on interview skills.
Standards: How do we compare to other Houses?
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU... AGAIN!
We have maintained our lead in achievement points – and congratulations to VCSC who were in the lead
on “good v evil” last week, and to VNP who have pushed VCSC into second place this week!
Two weeks ago, we had our latest lates total for ages – just 14. However, last week we were back up to 20,
which simply isn’t good enough – those people who are persistently late and not responding can soon
expect us to be meeting with parents to discuss this, as it is not going to be allowed to continue. Well done
to those of you who are NEVER late.
We are currently lying third for behaviour, and also for BfL. We have as yet not had a single student in
Isolation 2 this year, which is brilliant.
However, our attendance is the worst in the Academy... time for you to take some action!
House News

Thank you to everyone who attended the first parent review day with their parents. I was really
impressed with the quality of the conversations, the reflection on progress and the setting of
targets. KS3 can look forward to their first ever PRD in December.

Please can I meet with all of the prefects on Tuesday lunchtime in Life 1 to talk about shoeboxes.

Congratulations to VMG for sending the first completed shoeboxes to me! I have seen several
forms working on shoeboxes already, which is great. Flatpacked boxes can be collected from our
office any time you need them.

Well done VML for getting off the mark with fundraising proposals. They have come up with a great
idea to raise money for the shoeboxes. Who else is on with planning fundraising? Let’s be creative!

Please see the article in your tray.

Why should we recycle? What value is there of separating our waste into different boxes?
“Over 55s recycle 74% compared to 57% of 18-24 year olds” Why should that be the case?
Where does your rubbish go to on Teesside? (Hint: ask your students who has been to Haverton Hill)
What will happen if we don’t recycle?
How much do you think a typical magazine or newspaper would cost if they did not use recycled
paper? Hint: a typical paper can use from 50%plus of recycled paper.
