Welcome
Lynne Chamberlain
2010 WAWGG Chair
Aiming High
Welcome to the second decade of the 21st century. I’m honored to be
serving as the Chair of the WAWGG as we continue to progress into
the future!
For me, this year’s annual meeting theme Paper to Practice-Thory
Applied reflects a principle of looking at the whole picture of
“agripreneurship”, a title coined by Small Farm Today. Our business
is the thinking person’s agriculture. Backed by reasoning, reading and
research we learn to evaluate the overall process and our options. The
“agripreneur” will take the most useful of the new with the best of the
old and apply it to personal style. A successfully blended style requires
research, experimentation and application, which WAWGG has always
excelled at supporting through education, leadership and tools to help
its members and the industry, as a whole.
WAWGG is committed to helping the Washington wine industry be the
best it can be! That means we’ll continue to strive to provide the right
tools and resources, at the right price, right now, for our constituents to
benefit from.
When you participate in WAWGG you affirm the value of unity. We
can always do more collectively than we can do individually to advance
the interests of our industry. However, what you get out of WAWGG
is directly proportionate to what you put into it. With your input, your
action and your investment, you help ensure that this organization can
act effectively on your behalf.
Along with local, state, and national partners, we will continue to be
a strong, unified voice for growers on critical legislative and regulatory
actions advocating for priorities that lessen the impact of the current
economic downturn. As the market gains equilibrium we will be there
to remind our representatives about the importance of affordable
options for our state’s small businesses and the self-employed. And,
in collaboration with state agencies, we are devoting energy into
increased awareness about the work we do to keep quality in our
grape growing. We (WAWGG) are who people think of when buying
Washington grapes.
We are fortunate to have committed volunteers to help guide us. This
includes an impressive group of new volunteers who are the new ranks
of our committees. Look into our new Professional Development
session during the convention to learn more and be a part of it. We
welcome broader participation in other ways, too. Your 2010-2011
board is listed inside and it is a team that listens. We’re waiting to hear
from you.

EDUCATIONAL CONTENT
The success of WAWGG educational programming stems from a yearlong planning process which includes growers, wineries, marketers,
researchers, educators and extension specialists. The Outreach and
Technology Transfer Committee and the Board would like to particularly
thank WSU extension staff, WSU research staff and the WSU teaching
staff for their specific efforts. These individuals spend countless hours
formulating ideas into educational opportunities for our industry. This
unique mix of time, talent and commitment to the WAWGG meeting
content provides a program second to none. WAWGG would like to
extend a very special thank you to the Outreach and Technology
Transfer Committee Co-Chairs Kevin Corliss, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates
and Thomas Henick-Kling, WSU Viticulture and Enology Director.
Thanks To:
“Technical knowhow and education are cornerstones to the success
of the Washington wine industry. WAWGG and WSU scientists are
working together to provide the latest technical advances and provide
a forum to explore new ideas. Together we develop new opportunities
for the progressive Washington wine industry looking to refine their
wine flavors and continue to improve quality and value.”
~Thomas Henick-Kling, Co-Chair,
WAWGG Outreach and Technology Transfer Committee
“We strive to make the WAWGG Annual Meeting the premier grape
and wine educational event in the Pacific Northwest. Education and
science are critical to growers in the competitive and rapidly changing
business environment of wine and grape production. The regional
focus on premium quality production means that growers must be
on the cutting edge of viticulture as applied to our terroir. Sharing
experiences, ideas and sciences with colleagues is not only good
business, but is also a truly enjoyable social event.”
~Kevin Corliss, Co-Chair,
WAWGG Outreach and Technology Transfer Committee
STUDENT VOLUNTEERS

Community College, Central Washington University and the Walla
Walla Community College. These students offered their time and

Benton City
OVERVIEW: Gain practical knowledge that matters. Effective human
resource management is as important as vine management in the
vineyard or operations in the winery. Doing it right can increase
productivity but doing it wrong can cost you money. Learn to navigate
the system of employment and labor regulations. Understanding your
costs of production is key to making the right decisions for your
business. The information you receive from the Cost of Production
Calculators can be used to make changes to your practices, to better
understand the impacts of one practice compared to another, or can be
provided to lenders and bankers when you are seeking funding.

SESSION: Syrah: Star Or FUBAR? (Includes A Tasting, Ticket
Required)
SPONSOR: Hogue Cellars
SESSION MANAGERS: Brian Carter, Owner, Brian Carter Cellars
OVERVIEW: We will taste a range of styles of Washington Syrah with a
‘ringer’ from somewhere out of the state. Washington Syrah has many
supporters not the least of which are the Washington winemakers who
have enthusiastically encouraged the planting of close to 3,000 acres of
Syrah making it the third largest red variety in the state. The wines
produced have gained critical acclaim from both local and national
press. In addition to the great wines being made, Syrah has several
other advantages including being relatively easy to grow, being
adaptable to many growing areas and a market place that seemed to be
receptive to the variety due to its historical familiarity from France and
Australia. So why are there reports of so many wineries being backed
up on Syrah with concomitant falling prices? Is Syrah doomed to being
a third rate variety behind Cabernet and Merlot? Is there something
that growers or winemakers can do to revitalize this grape? Each of our
widely experienced panelists will address these questions from their
own unique perspective.
