My passion for equality and exploration came together when I came to the University of
Delaware. During my sophomore year I spent a month in South Africa, a country much different
from the United States whose citizens experienced a great deal of inequality during the Apartheid
and continue to do so. This experience was life-changing; after the trip I abruptly rotated my
field of study from human services, working with people who were experiencing inequalities, to
studying public policy, finding ways and creating policies to prevent such inequalities.
From that point in my academic career to present, travel and focusing on health and social inequalities have dominated my studies. I have been an Engagement Leader for the Mandela
Washington Fellows Young Africans Leadership initiative, which involved coordinating, orchestrating, and participating in a program for some of the greatest young leaders in civic engagement from Sub-Sahara Africa. I spent my fall semester of 2014 studying public health in Copenhagen, Finland, and Latvia where I was exposed to the myriad ways of combating health inequalities across countries and cultures. I was forced to think out of the U.S. context when solving
problems and learned new and productive ways of doing so. I recently traveled to Seoul, South
Korea, to study urban planning and management in a country that faced extremely limited resources only 60 years ago and yet is now one of the most thriving economies in the world.
I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate in and learn from these incredible opportunities. I plan to continue to seek out these growth experiences as I begin my Master of
Public Administration degree. Over the years and through my travels, I have been able to narrow
my interests and focus on learning transferrable skills that can be applied to my concentration of
International Health Economics. As an Undergraduate Public Administration Fellow with the
Institute of Public Administration, I have become proficient in data programming systems such
as SPSS, SAS, and ArcGIS, which I have used on economic community development projects,
and I continue to learn new skills and further my professional development.
One of the greatest lessons I have learned during my time as a student at the University of
Delaware, is the importance of being ready to learn at all times. Although my MPA concentration is in International Health Economics, I am very intrigued and interested in exploring multiple policy areas to which I have yet to be exposed. Through my travels, I have learned that while
there is no shortage of inequalities, there are multiple ways to address the problems. With my
organizational skills, determination, and open-mindedness, I believe I am well prepared to be the
best intern for my host organization.
