E-Commerce at Your Door Step
A Vision Driven by Standards
My Hope for Today
• Understand What I See:
– Transition from Bricks & Mortar to E-Street.
• What I Want To Sell
• What I Need So I Can Sell
• Understand My Concerns:
– Perception
– Road Blocks
• Ideas for Tomorrow
– Where/How Standards Can Play

Transition to E-Street
• Today
– Focused On My Customer
– Targeted Product Line to Meet Needs
– Ascribe to All Applicable Laws, Standards,
Regulations, Registrations & Certifications
– Know my Environment
• Tomorrow
– No Change

Shifting to "Glocalization”
• Glocalization - Global Localization

I build to sell here
I build to use here
I build for there
I build for use there

Glocalization - But Can We?

Too Many Variables!
Too Many Unknowns!
Defacto vs Dejure Standards
Multiple Channels
– New Opportunities
– Compounded Problems

New Channels or New Market?
• Internet - New Channel #1
• IP Convergence - New Channel #2
• Multimedia Technology - New Method
Global Availability = Enormous Complexity
+ Huge Opportunity!

Fraud Prevails!
• Biometrics Technology Today estimates that cellular
telephone fraud currently costs USD 1 billion per year
worldwide, while calling card fraud through theft of
cards and identity abuse is estimated to be as much as
USD 1.1 billion globally.

Authentication = Compounded Problems
"Wireless technology promises anywhere,
anytime Internet <IP-based Network>
access. But wireless e-business won't
move beyond niche applications anywhere
or anytime if spotty security, immature
standards, patchy service and user
authentication shortcomings aren't directly
addressed."

E-Commerce or Me-Commerce?
•First major authentication requirement:
Telephone Banking
•Methods:
Caller Line ID &
User Passwords
•Future Drivers:
PDA/Mobile Convergence
and Wireless Application
Protocol (WAP, iMode +
IMT 2000)
But Caller ID and User/Source ID’s Don’t Exist!
Edmond J. Blausten
E-Commerce or Me-Commerce?
When Authentication and Non-repudiation is
Accomplished:
• Programmable wireless phones will likely replace PCs as the
principal means of access.
• Most applications currently classified as “e-commerce”, will need to
be adapted to the needs of the mobile environment (“Me-Commerce”)
to recognize Authentication criteria.

Commerce -> E-Commerce -> Me-Commerce
• No Common Bridge
• Each Channel Handled Differently
• Unique Solutions Drive Higher Costs
Isn’t There a Common Standard Answer Possible??

Uniform Currency or Cashless Society?
•
•
•
•
Common Currency (UND)
Worldwide / Sovereign Rights
Dynamic Conversion (‘SpotOn’)
Mondex Cash Alternative
But Even Cashless Doesn’t Identify Who or Where!

Liability & Right to Information
• If You are My Customer, Can’t I:
– Know Your History
– Know Your Preferences
– Track Your Activities
– It’s “Mine”
Or Is It??
