Evening Courses Syllabus
Turkish Beginners
Turkish Level 1
Prerequisite for entry
For complete beginners or those who have only had very little contact with the
language.
Term duration
10 x 2-hour classes.
Aims and Objectives
The aim of the course is to enable students to function in everyday spoken and written
Turkish at a basic level. The course aims to develop all four language skills (reading,
writing, listening, and speaking) through various texts, tasks and dialogues.
Functions

Greetings, introducing yourself and others.
Buying food.
Ordering food and drink in a restaurant.
Simple descriptions of yourself, family, friends and places.
Asking the way and giving simple directions.
Finding accommodation.
Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered

First contacts.
Occupation and centres of interest.
Talking about family, friends and daily activities and future plans.
Working on dialogues and writing simple dialogues.
Time, colours, food, measurements, numbers, days of the week, months.
Poems, songs and advertisements.
Locations, directions.

Consonant change: Hardening and Softening
Narrowing
Grammar

Noun suffixes
Personal suffixes having the function of verb to be
Non verbal negative and interrogative structures
Cases: Dative, Locative, Ablative, Accusative.
Basic postpositions and linking words
Past tense, introducing present tense.
Compound verbs.
Introducing genetive case.
