The Challenge

Alstom is a leader in power generation, transmission and distribution, and is active in rail and marine transportation. The company has annual sales in excess of 23 billion euros and employs 120,000 people in over 70 countries. ALSTOM is listed on the Paris,

London and New York stock exchanges.

In 2001, Alstom Canada was involved in a project for

Ontario Power Generation (OPG), an Ontario-based company whose principal business is the generation and sale of electricity to customers in Ontario and in interconnected markets.

Alstom needed a protocol converter gateway to allow a PLC using Modicon MODBUS to communicate with two IEMOs (Independent Electricity Market Operator), a remote SCADA system, and a GRMC (Generation

Resource Management Center), all using DNP3.

The Solution

Cooper Power Systems delivered its SMP Gateway to bridge the gap between the DNP3 and MODBUS protocols.

Cooper Power Systems' custom software and consulting group implemented a number of changes to the standard product, delivering a very cost-effective solution with a quick turnaround.
