A. Rationale for Revision:

The second half of the Western Civilization survey as currently offered does not include the Second

World War. There are, however, good reasons for extending the timeframe of the course to include coverage of this seminal event. The Second World War marks the culmination point of many of the historical forces and trends covered in HIST 102: the impact of technology on how wars are fought, the invention of pseudo-scientific racism, the increasing movement of women from the private to the public sphere, the growth of the power of the state. In addition, many of the problems caused in

Europe by historical upheavals such as industrialization, nationalism, imperialism, and the rise of mass politics are not resolved until the post-World War II period, when Europe genuinely enters a new historical epoch. Finally, the cultural and political impact of the Second World War still exercises a powerful influence on European, American, and global politics and culture. History majors, as well as students whose only exposure to college-level history will be in HIST 102, would be better served by their time in this course if they were to emerge from it with a basic knowledge of

World War II and the Holocaust.
