II. Approval of Minutes (March 13, 2014)
III. Reports

B. Arts Report (April 3, 2014)
IV. New Business

• Guest: Beth Kubitskey
B. URSLC election
V. Old Business
A. Proposal to re-classify ECON as a “Science” in the Input Document: discussion and vote
• Guest: Mehmet Yaya
C. Update: Liberal Arts Major for Elementary Education program revision
• Arts 10-10-13: “The three ART and MAD guests discussed the proposed replacement of ARTE220 Visual Arts for
Elementary Teachers and MUSC220 Music for Elementary Teachers with “any gened approved Visual Arts course”
and “any gened approved Music course”, and the proposed removal of DANC220 Dance for Elementary Teachers.
COE wishes to make it easier for students to meet requirements through general education courses and to reduce the
total credits from these courses from 9 to 6. The common concern was that these courses are designed specifically
for teacher educational needs whereas their general education courses lack such content. Counter proposals were
distributed with alternative suggestions for COE to consider. Not Passed Unanimously: COE must discuss this issue
with ART and MAD.”
• Sciences 10-10-13: “1) This proposal will leave many students with a hidden prerequisite (CHEM 101 is a
prerequisite for ESSC 202). 2) It also seems that there is no pedagogical rationale for cutting the courses that are cut.
3) The chemistry department was not consulted regarding this program revision. 4) The Next Generation Science
standards were just released and included more science and engineering curriculum, as is consistent with the
national imperative for better science preparedness within K-8 education. As such, this is the wrong time to be
cutting science from this program. Having one physics course alone will not cover all facets of physical science
included in these standards. Motion to reject proposal based upon the comments above (Angell, Curran second; 5-00); motion passes”
B. Update: Reading Minor and Language Arts Minor program revisions
• Arts 12-12-13: “Not Passed because there was no COE faculty vote on the proposal, raising questions about
faculty input, and because the proposal is not clear concerning what is meant by “substitute” in the proposed
revision for the Reading Minor (students in the Reading minor can substitute those courses or only those who are
also minoring in the Language Arts Minor?) (Motion to Not Pass: 6 for, 0 against, 1 abstention). One suggestion to
make this clear to students was to create a separate list of Reading Minor courses for students also minoring in
Language Arts.”
