JOB TITLE:
Writing and Teaching Specialist
Full-time, 10 month position
DEPARTMENT:
Center for Teaching and Learning/Library
DIVISION:
Academic Affairs
REPORTS TO:
College Librarian
POSITION SUMMARY:
Collaborates with faculty and staff to enhance the writing ability of Cornell College
students through
• partnering with faculty to teach writing skills and strategies in the context of
introductory writing and other courses across all disciplines,
• providing writing consultation to students from all academic backgrounds
• collaborating with faculty on developing writing pedagogy,
• providing input to faculty in assessment of student work, and,
• assisting students with the transition to college writing
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - (Essential functions of the
position):
1. Consults with and assists faculty who teach introductory writing courses
•
Conducts in-class instruction in partnership with instructors;
•
Facilitates writing workshops in partnership with instructors in their courses;
•
Provides individual writing consultations for students;
•
Collaborates on faculty development of writing pedagogy;
•
Maintains awareness of issues associated with intellectual property and identifies
ways to communicate information to students;
•
Collaborates with writing program faculty in long- and short-range planning and
assessment.

2. Facilitates transition to college writing for first-year students.
•
Conducts classroom instruction sessions and individual consultations.
•
Coordinates and teaches a .25 credit adjunct academic writing course.
•
Coordinates Center for Teaching & Learning involvement in First Year Seminar
classes.
•
Collaborates with the Coordinator of Academic Support and Advising relating to
students’ transition to college life.
•
Collaborates with consulting librarians regarding the information search process
when relevant to writing assignments.
3. Consults with and assists faculty in the development and support of writing instruction
beyond introductory courses and across disciplines.
•
Conducts in-class instruction in partnership with instructors;
•
Provides individual writing consultations for students;
•
Collaborates on faculty development of writing pedagogy;
4. Collaborates with Writing Studio Director to help coordinate support for Writing
Studio staffing and consultations.
5. Collaborates with Writing Program Committee on the development and advancement
of the Writing Program goals and objectives.
6. Keeps abreast of literature about writing in the disciplines and first-year experience
programs, and transition to writing for college.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
1. Completes special projects at the request of library colleagues or the Vice President
of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College.

2. Communicates with appropriate committees to support First Year Program goals.
3. Collaborates with appropriate faculty committees as requested to provide
coordination with the Writing Studio.
4. Participates in the life of the College.
5. Other duties as assigned.
WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the College Librarian. Works with the College Librarian and professional
library and Center for Teaching & Learning staff. Has daily contact with students, college
staff, and faculty.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION:
Expertise and experience within higher education in conducting writing consultations and/or
teaching writing is required. A Master’s degree in English, Rhetoric, TEOSL, or related field
required. Experience working in a Writing Center preferred. Training and experience in
writing across the curriculum desired. Experience working with first-year students and/or
programs, desired.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
An understanding of the writing process, particularly in an integrated curriculum. Ability
to teach composition. Understanding of citation styles and familiarity with a variety of
style manuals. Skill in working in a team-based situation, both in and out of the
classroom. Familiarity with Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Word.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed in a classroom or in the library. Must have the ability to go
from building to building.
