President’s Committee on Diversity
Annual Report
2013 - 2014
Prepared by:
Tina Gianquitto – 2013-2014 Chair
Andrea Salazar Morgan – 2013-2014 Past Chair
Deb Lasich – Associate Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion
This report summarizes the activities of the President’s Committee on Diversity for the 2013-2014
academic year. We thank President Scoggins for his continuing support and the financial investment
to promote diversity at Mines. Highlights of the year include

High profile and impactful speakers, providing broad perspectives and appeal to
faculty, staff and students,

More focused and inclusive week of diversity-related programs and events in
January, made possible by substantial continued internal and external
sponsorships, and

Additional programming in the spring semester to continue the diversity and
inclusion conversation.
Programming
The President’s Committee on Diversity has a focus on enhancing campus climate through educational
programming, one of the president’s four priorities for diversity at Mines. Programs held in 2013-2014
are summarized in Table 1. Of particular note was the visit by Dr. Amy Slaton, a professor of History
in the Department of History and Politics at Drexel University in Philadelphia at the President’s Diversity
Breakfast to approximately 140 Mines staff and faculty. In addition, Dr. Slaton met with the President,
members of the President’s Cabinet, faculty members and Diversity Committee Members.
The collection of programs and events as part of DeltaDays is listed in Table 1. This year the committee
continued to exploring the concepts of self-discovery, why diversity matters, and what individuals can
do to enhance the campus environment. The committee also decided to have fewer events in order
to offer other diversity related events throughout the spring.
The week began with the annual MLK Day Breakfast, which was expanded to include students this
year, mid-day birthday cake, and evening entertainment. The recipients for the 2014 Martin Luther
King, Jr. Recognition Award, which honors Mines community members who are exceptional in their
appreciation for diversity and understanding of its value on the Mines campus, were:
 Dr. Derrick Hudson, Assistant Professor, LAIS
 Dr. Barbara Moskal, Professor, Applied Mathematics and Statistics
 Chelsea Sandridge, Senior in Applied Math & Statistics
DeltaDays included seven events and programs, and had attendance of over 750 students, faculty,
and staff. This does not include the 800 students, faculty, and staff who also took part in the MLK Day
Birthday Cake Celebration. The additional three spring diversity related events had an attendance of
270 students, faculty and staff.

Sponsorships totaled over $$17,250, which completely covered the cost of DeltaDays.

Committee Goals for 2014-2015
1. Given the creation of the Associate VP of Diversity and Inclusion, review the current
structure and purpose of the Diversity Committee is under discussion. There has been much
discussion regarding the current structure of the Diversity Committee, and the need to refine the
membership attributes.
2. To engage more faculty and students in attendance at diversity events. While more can be
done here, progress was made in attracting more faculty and students to participate in the diversityrelated events.
In addition, the President also asked the Committee to address the following areas:
1. Engage more of the “middle”
Through more deliberate programming, we focused on topics, venues, and times that would
reach a broader spectrum of the campus. We provided programming for students, faculty and
staff, and scheduled them at different times of the day and week, particularly DeltaDays events.
The subject matter included conflict management, social justice, privilege, personality styles,
cultural art, as well as race, gender, and GLBT education.
2.
Develop new programming for DeltaDays and consider moving it to later in the semester

2013-2014 Annual Report
We developed new programming, more focused events, and better advertising for DeltaDays
(see below). To help with attendance, and the impact of each event, we plan to use a similar
format as this year, but with a few less events next year.

Diversity Committee Membership
Executive committee members are shown in Appendix A, and committee members are shown in
Appendix B. By the end of the spring semester, the committee had 34 members. At this time, the
committee is structured so that any faculty, staff, or student can attend meetings and become official
members upon an annual vote. There is concern about managing an increasing number of members.
This continued to be discussed by the executive committee this summer.
