ESPA’s History
• Launched in 2006 as part of the UK Government’s Living
with Environmental Change Programme (LWEC).
• Design informed by six situation analyses.
• 11 Strengthening Research Capacity projects
implemented during 2009.
• 28 PPD and 18 Framework projects funded in 2010.
• ESPA Directorate operational from 1 Sept 2010
• AO for consortium projects launched 17 Sept 2010.
• Consortium projects to be funded in 2011.

• Six studies were commissioned to inform
the design of the programme:
– Africa
– South Asia
– China
– Amazonia
– Coastal Marine
– Desakota (peri-urban)

• Total budget of £16 million

• Developing an ESPA Knowledge Framework
• Ensuring the quality and relevance of ESPA’s
science.
• Identifying gaps, synergies and overlaps in the
ESPA research programme
• Supporting Interdisciplinary working.
• Integration and synthesis of knowledge relevant
to ESPA.
– Including reviewing existing knowledge.
– Linking to indigenous knowledge.
• Organising scientific meetings and building links
with other science programmes and societies.
Capacity Building

• The Directorate will assist projects to:
– Conceptualise impact.

• Supplementary documents on the ESPA
Knowledge and Impact frameworks will be
published by the end of October 2010.
• Workshops will be held in each ESPA
region (and the USA) during November
and early December 2010.
Building Partnerships
• Many of the funded ESPA Partnership and
Project Development projects currently do
not cover the scale of ambition and potential
impact expected from the September 2010
AO.
• Use this workshop to meet other potential
partners.
• Consider building linkages with the ESPA
Framework projects.
• Discuss your ideas with the Directorate.
