While CLT was replacing its 12 High Pressure Sodium (HPS) roadway lights with
LED lights as a component of CLT’s 2012 Pilot Project, an opportunity presented
itself to integrate advanced monitoring technology for the new LED roadway
lights as another component of the pilot project.
The pilot project steering committee selected Nexgrid to participate in the
advanced monitoring technology.

Nexgrid’s ecoOne enterprise software provides meter data, network, load control,
streetlight, outage & customer portal management all in one easy-to-use
platform. CLT utilized 1 ecoNet SL gateway and 12 ecoSwitch SL’s in the pilot
project. The devices were installed by simply plugging into the existing

SL’s; and its IT crew to install the ecoNet SL communication gateway,
which provides the smart grid network infrastructure while monitoring and
managing the streetlight.

The ecoSwitch SL houses a 30 amp relay and ZigBee communication module for
direct control of streetlight scheduling, monitoring power consumption and
current sensing for power outages. This powerful feature allows for detailed load
study functions. In addition to streetlight control, the ecoSwitch SL ensures
greater reliability and redundancy throughout the smart grid network
infrastructure.

Before the project, CLT was using a remote photo sensor to control the 12 lights.
With Nexgrid’s software and hardware, CLT is now able to program the lights to
on during a thunderstorm to ensure passenger safety, as well as having the LED
streetlights dim during the late night hours of no passenger activity to conserve
energy. In addition, an increase in labor productivity is now possible, since the
