Development of Emerging Technologies
in Biospecimen Science (R21) (NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA), issued by the National Cancer
Institute (NCI), solicits grant applications
proposing technically innovative feasibility studies focused on early stage development of technologies that address issues
related to pre-analytical variations in the
collection, processing, handling, and storage of cancer-relevant biospecimens or
their derivatives. The overall goal is to
develop technologies capable of interrogating and/or maximizing the quality and
utility of biospecimens or samples derived
from those biospecimens for downstream
molecular analyses. This FOA will support
the development of tools, devices, instrumentation, and associated methods to

The Federal Cyber Service: Scholarship
for Service (SFS) program seeks to
increase the number of qualified students
entering the fields of information assurance and cybersecurity and to increase the
capacity of the United States higher education enterprise to continue to produce
professionals in these fields to meet the
needs of our increasingly technological
society. The SFS program is composed of
two tracks: The Scholarship Track provides funding to colleges and universities
to award scholarships to students in the
information assurance and cybersecurity
fields. The Capacity Building Track provides funds to colleges and universities to
improve the quality and increase the production of high-quality information assurance and cybersecurity professionals by
providing support for efforts within the
higher education system, as well as outreach to K-12 students with related interests. An individual may participate as PI,
Co-PI, or Senior Personnel in at most one
proposal per track in each annual SFS
competition. NSF 12-531

5-6 Special Program Announcement
for 2012 Office of Naval Research
Research Opportunity: Basic Research
Challenge: Carbon Molecular
Electronics (DOD)
The Office of Naval Research (ONR) is
interested in receiving proposals on carbon-based molecular electronics. The
objective of this Basic Research Challenge (BRC) program is to encourage
research and innovation in bottom-up
chemical synthesis and assembly of carbon, particularly graphene, based electronic devices and circuits with atomic
precision and Angstrom resolution. The
program will address the challenges and
limitations in top-down fabricated
graphene nanoelectronic devices, where
structures are too large (limited by lithography) and intrinsic graphene properties
are often masked by edge roughness and
hard to measure. The long term vision of
the program is to enable a new kind of
molecular electronics – a single giant
molecule made of carbon or other related
materials that functions as electronic,
magnetic or optical devices or circuits.

5-7 Chemistry and Materials
Research in Cultural Heritage Science
(CHS) (NSF)
The National Science Foundation (NSF)
seeks to enhance opportunities for collaborative activities between conservation
scientists, chemists and materials scientists to address grand challenges in the
field of science of cultural heritage. The
program solicits collaborative proposals
between researchers in US museums and
academic institutions that aim to: a)
develop new and improved analytical
techniques and instruments with high sensitivity and spatial resolution (large and
small scale) for restricted volume and/or
standoff detection of component materials, degradation products and deterioration markers that are suitable for nondestructive analysis of cultural heritage
objects; b) study dynamic changes leading to degradation of cultural heritage
objects; c) design new multi-functional
treatment materials for cultural heritage
objects; d) develop new theoretical models to predict dynamic processes in cultural heritage objects that lead to their
degradation while taking into account
their molecular and materials properties
and their surface and bulk interactions
with environmental perimeters. An investigator may be a PI or Co-PI of only one
proposal submitted in response to this
solicitation. NSF 12-530

5-9
Biodiversity Program (NASA)
There is widespread concern about biodiversity declines across all organizational
levels, particularly given that human
actions may be driving a mass extinction
event comparable to those seen in the
geological record. As a result, the
research community is seeking tools to
understand the condition of biodiversity
and how it is changing over time. To
address biodiversity loss as a global issue
requires us to integrate research efforts
across multiple spatial and temporal
scales and observe biodiversity at all of its
levels of organization. To catalyze
progress in our understanding of biodiversity patters, processes, and change, the
NASA Biodiversity Program is soliciting
proposals in conjunction with the
National Science Foundation Dimensions
of Biodiversity Program for FY 2012.
Through Dimensions of Biodiversity,
NSF seeks to transform how we describe
and understand the scope and role of life
on Earth. While NSF typically supports
research at fine to coarser spatial scales,
NASA, with its use of satellite imagery,
generally supports research at coarse to
finer scales. NNH11ZDA001N

5-10 APS For Food Security,
Nutrition, Biodiversity and
Conservation (USAID)
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) continues its commitment to foster more strategic alliances
with the private sector’s “solution holders” who are often well positioned to
address specific development challenges.
The purpose of this APS is to announce
USAID/Uganda’s plans to fund a limited
number of Public Private Alliances to
enhance food security and address issues
of biodiversity and conservation. Competition under this APS will consist of a
two-step process where applicants first
submit a Concept Paper for an initial
competitive review. This APS seeks PPAs
in two key priority areas: 1) food security
and nutrition; and 2) biodiversity and conservation. In regards to food security and
nutrition, USAID/Uganda is seeking priority partnerships that include promising
methods for substantially advancing coffee, maize, beans, agro-inputs, nutritional
food products, financial services, and
information and communication technologies (ICT) solutions. Biodiversity priorities include innovative methods for
promoting ecotourism as well as averting
ecological and trans-boundary threats.
