GENERAL
24-1 Research Experiences for
Undergraduates (NSF)
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active
research participation by undergraduate
students in any of the areas of research
funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in
meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically
designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: 1) REU Sites are
based on independent proposals to initiate
and conduct projects that engage a number
of students in research. REU Sites may be
based in a single discipline or academic
department or may offer interdisciplinary
or multi-department research opportunities
with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are
welcome. 2) REU Supplements may be
included as a component of proposals for
new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative
agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects. Undergraduate student participants in either
REU Sites or REU Supplements must be
U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent
residents of the United States.NSF 12-569

24-2 Arctic SEES (ArcSEES)
Science, Engineering, and Education
for Sustainability (NSF)
ArcSEES is a multi-year, interdisciplinary program which seeks both fundamental research that improves our ability
to evaluate the sustainability of the Arctic human-environmental system as well
as integrated efforts which will provide
community-relevant sustainability pathways and engineering solutions. For this
competition, interdisciplinary research
will be focused in four thematic areas:
the natural and living environment, the
built environment, natural resource
development, and governance. ArcSEES
plans to support fundamental, pilot
efforts and larger, outcomes-relevant
research. All proposers are required to
provide context for how the project
advances science for sustainability and to
identify the communities and real-world
scenarios to which the research products
are relevant. While community-based
participatory research projects that
engage Arctic resident and indigenous
populations in the conception and implementation of the research are encouraged, ArcSEES also welcomes activities
that entrain other classes of stakeholders
and facilitate education through participation of tribal colleges and minorityserving institutions. NSF 12-553

24-3 Documenting Democracy:
Access to Historical Records Projects
(NARA)
The National Historical Publications and
Records Commission seeks proposals
that promote the preservation and use of
the nation’s most valuable archival
resources. Projects should expand our
understanding of the American past by
facilitating and enhancing access to primary source materials. The Commission
will support such activities as establishing archives programs, processing archival collections at the basic or detailed
levels, surveying and accessioning archival records, and converting existing
archival collection finding aids to new
online formats. Applicants may submit
proposals for one or any combination of
the following four project categories.
Categories1. Basic Processing Proposals;
2) Detailed Processing for collections

24-5 Arts in Education National
Program (ED)
The Arts in Education National Program
(AENP) supports national-level highquality arts education activities and services for children and youth, with special
emphasis on serving children from low
income families and children with disabilities. The priority is one or more highquality projects that are designed to
develop and implement, or expand, initiatives in arts education and arts integration
on a national level for prekindergartenthrough-grade-12 children and youth,
with special emphasis on serving children
from low-income families and children
with disabilities. In order to meet this priority, an applicant must demonstrate that
the project for which it seeks funding will
provide services and develop initiatives in
multiple schools and school districts
throughout the country, including in at
least one urban, at least one rural, and at
least one high-need community. EDGRANTS-061512-001 (GG 6/18/12)

transformative research, lead to innovation, and attract broad scientific and public interest. CCIs are agile structures that
can respond rapidly to emerging opportunities and make full use of cyberinfrastructure to enhance collaborations. CCIs
may partner with researchers from industry, government laboratories and international organizations. CCIs integrate
research, innovation, education, and
informal science communication and
include a plan to broaden participation of
underrepresented groups. The CCI program is a two-phase program. Phase I

24-7 Partnerships for Innovation:
Accelerating Innovation Research
(PFI: AIR) (NSF)
To continue to strengthen the innovation
ecosystem, NSF is revising NSF 12-511
to promote two choices under the Partnerships for Innovation (PFI): Accelerating
Innovation Research (AIR) subprogram.
The first choice, Technology Translation,
encourages the translation of technologically-promising research discoveries
made by prior and/or current NSF-funded
investigators toward a path of commercialization; while the second choice,
Research Alliance, promotes synergistic
collaborations between an existing NSFfunded research alliance (including consortia such as Engineering Research Centers, Industry University Cooperative
