Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) will award the
MARC Ancillary Training Activities
(T36) Program as a means to facilitate
the training and development of individuals from groups underrepresented in the
biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and
social sciences. Ancillary training support is provided for national conferences,
short courses, or other well-defined training activities that further the NIGMS
mission of increasing the diversity of the

25-3 National Robotics Initiative
(NRI) The realization of co-robots
acting in direct support of individuals
and groups (NSF)
25-1 Climate Program Office for FY
2012 (OAR) (NOAA)
NOAA’s Climate Program Office (CPO)
manages competitive research programs
conducted in regions across the United
States, at national and international scales,
and globally. Achieving the first of the
NGSP climate objectives, an improved scientific understanding of the changing climate system and its impacts, requires a
number of core capabilities be supported.
These core capabilities can be broadly categorized to include: a) understanding and
modeling, b) observing systems, data
stewardship, and climate monitoring, c)
predictions and projections, and d) integrated service development and decision
support. These core capabilities, in turn,
will focus initially on the following societal challenges identified in the NGSP as
early evidence of progress to be made by
NOAA in providing sustained, reliable,
and timely climate services: Climate
Impacts on Water Resources; Coasts and
Climate Resilience; Sustainability of
Marine Ecosystems; Changes in Extremes
of Weather and Climate; and Information
for Mitigating Climate Change. Each of
the Competitions announced in this Federal Funding Opportunity addresses one or
The goal of the National Robotics Initiative is to accelerate the development and
use of robots in the United States that
work beside, or cooperatively with, people. Innovative robotics research and
applications emphasizing the realization
of such co-robots acting in direct support
of and in a symbiotic relationship with
human partners is supported by multiple
agencies of the federal government
including the National Science Foundation (NSF) the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA), the
National Institute of Health (NIH), and
the U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA). The purpose of this program is
the development of this next generation
of robotics, to advance the capability and
usability of such systems and artifacts,
and to encourage existing and new communities to focus on innovative application areas. It will address the entire life
cycle from fundamental research and
development to industry manufacturing
and deployment. Methods for the establishment and infusion of robotics in educational curricula and research to gain a
better understanding of the long term
social, behavioral and economic implica-
tions of co-robots across all areas of
human activity are important parts of this
initiative. Collaboration between academic, industry, non-profit and other
organizations is strongly encouraged to
establish better linkages between fundamental science and technology development, deployment and use. Two classes of
proposals will be considered in response
to this solicitation: 1) Small projects: One
or more investigators spanning 1 to 5
years; and 2) Large projects: Multi-disciplinary teams spanning 1 to 5 years. NSF

25-4 NICHD Continuing Education
Training Programs (T15) (NIH)
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National
Institute of Child Health and Human
Development (NICHD) invites applications for grants to develop and conduct
short-term continuing education programs
to improve the knowledge and skills of a
broad-based community of biomedical
and behavioral researchers conducting
research on reproductive, developmental,
behavioral, social, and rehabilitative processes that determine the health and wellbeing of newborns, infants, children,
adults, families, and populations, and to
disseminate course materials and instructional experience to the scientific community. The program should include both
didactic and hands-on experiences. Programs focusing on uses of model organisms are also encouraged. PAR-11-233

BUSINESS
25-5 FY 2011 Research Design Project
(EDA)
The Economic Development Agency
(EDA) seeks applications to develop and
test measures, metrics, indicators, and
methodologies to help the agency more
effectively assess, evaluate, and report the
full impact of its economic development
investments on regional economies across
the Nation. High quality performance
evaluation is imperative to ensuring the
effective operation of EDA’s programs,
and such evaluation is highly dependent
on the availability of valid and accurate
information. Currently, EDA’s primary
metrics for assessing potential investments focus on economic outcomes
related to job creation, private investment

leveraged, and bolstering regional capacity. Under this competitive solicitation,
the agency seeks to identify a broader
array of measures which could be utilized
to assess the impact of EDA’s investments
on regional economies, particularly measures which help identify the outcomes
that result from EDA’s investments. Additionally, the agency seeks information
which could inform and enhance its forecasting and validation methods. (GG 7/6/

25-6 ROSES-11 Amendment 14:
Terrestrial Ecology (NASA)
The goals of NASA’s Terrestrial Ecology
research are to improve understanding of
the structure and function of global terrestrial ecosystems, their interactions with
the atmosphere and hydrosphere, and
their role in the cycling of the major biogeochemical elements and water. This
program of research addresses impacts to
and vulnerability of ecosystems and the
carbon cycle to global environmental
changes; development and utilization of
new and/or multi-sensor remote sensing
analysis approaches to estimate important
ecosystem and carbon cycle properties;
coastal ecosystem impacts of the 2010
Gulf of Mexico oil spill through analysis
of NASA airborne data; and follow-on
studies that advance the results of prior
NASA Terrestrial Ecology research.

25-7 Catalysis and Biocatalysis (NSF)
Due to the ubiquitous presence of catalysis in the many aspects of goods and services impacting our lives, the Catalysis
and Biocatalysis program has many
potential directions for funding support.
Programs in this area encompass a blend
of fundamental and innovative applied
research drivers. All programs are
hypothesis-driven, and the experimental
programs aimed at resolving the issues
frequently combine a variety of
approaches. Chemical engineering and
chemistry are intertwined. Proposals
which receive funding in this Program
may include any number of the following
broad scopes: Catalyst Synthesis, Characterization, Behavior and Performance;
Kinetics and mechanisms of Key Catalytic Reactions; Catalysis at Surfaces or in
Reactor Process Streams; Synthesis and
Fabrication of Component materials and
Catalyst Composites; Modeling and Fundamental Studies of a Catalyst or Catalytic Process; Catalysts and Studies for
Renewable Energy Systems. PD-12-1401

25-10 Nutrition Obesity Research
Centers (P30) (NIH)
This FOA issued by the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases invites grant applications
from institutions/organizations that propose to establish core centers that are part
of an integrated program of nutrition and/
or obesity-research. The Nutrition Obesity Research center program is based on
the core concept, whereby shared
resources aimed at fostering productivity,
synergy, and new research ideas among
the funded investigators are supported in
a cost-effective manner. Each NORC
must be organized around central themes
that reflect the nutrition and/or obesity
research focus of the center members.

25-11 Catalyzing New International
Collaborations (NSF)
Grants from the Office of International
Science and Engineering (OISE) contribute to NSF’s mission by supporting
research and education activities that
present unique opportunities and offer
potentially high benefits through collaboration with scientists and engineers
abroad. This solicitation offers support for
the initial phases of an international collaboration with the strong expectation that
the next phase will involve submission of
a follow-on proposal for continued funding of the collaborative research. U.S.
groups will be expected to develop a
future proposal for continued funding that
would be competitive in the merit-review
process of the appropriate NSF program.
It is required that PIs establish communication with the cognizant OISE country
