Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin (FB
29-10) or by at least two months prior to
the sponsor deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program.

29-4 Materials World Network:
Cooperative Activity in Materials
Research between US Investigators
and their Counterparts Abroad
(MWN) (NSF)
That National Science Foundation is
working jointly with counterpart
national, regional and multinational
funding organizations worldwide to
enhance opportunities for collaborative
activities in materials research and education between US investigators and
their colleagues abroad. This solicitation
describes an activity to foster opportunities for such collaborations. It includes
joint activities between NSF and funding
organizations in Africa, the Americas,
through the Inter-American Materials
Collaboration (CIAM); Asia and Europe.
Proposals submitted to NSF in response
to this solicitation must have clear relevance to research supported by the NSF
Division of Materials Research (DMR),
as they will be evaluated within the context of programmatic areas within DMR:
condensed matter physics, solid state and
materials chemistry, polymers, biomaterials, metallic materials and nanostructures, ceramics, electronic and photonic
materials, and condensed matter and
materials theory. NSF will accept proposals from US academic institutions
addressing collaborations between
researchers from the US and participating countries or regions. Concurrently,
investigators at non-US research institutions should submit to the counterpart
funding organization in their country or
region a request for support of their side
of the collaboration. An investigator may
serve as PI or Co-PI in either a) a proposal submitted in response to this solicitation or, b) an unsolicited proposal
submitted to the Division of Materials
Research within the FY2011 DMR submission window, but not both. NSF 10588

29-5 Climate Program Office (NOAA)
(DOC)
Changing climate confronts society with
significant economic, health, safety, and
national security challenges. NOAA has
important responsibilities in conducting
observations, research, prediction, and
information management for the purpose
of understanding and responding to climate and global change. The NOAA Climate Program Office (CPO) manages the
competitive research programs in which
NOAA funds high-priority climate science to advance understanding of Earth’s
climate system and its atmospheric, oceanic, land and snow and ice components.
The CPO is in the process of restructuring
its grants programs that will go into effect
with this announcement of opportunity.
The grants activities are now organized
within four Programs: Climate Observations and Monitoring, Earth System Science, Modeling, Analysis, Predictions,
and Projections, and Climate and Societal
Interactions. In addition, the CPO
announces an opportunity in FY 2011 that
cuts across these four Programs to deal
with Improving NOAA’s Climate Services for the Coastal Zone. NOAA-OARCPO-2011-2002561 (GG 7/20/10)

29-6 ROSES 2010: Earth Surface and
Interior (NASA)
The Earth Surface and Interior (ESI)
focus area can be divided into three thematic areas, Land Surface Change and
associated Natural Hazards; Space Geodesy; and Earth’s Planetary Interior—its
structure and dynamics, that address the
following four research questions within
the Earth Science Division: 1) Prediction:
How can knowledge of the Earth’s surface change be used to predict and mitigate natural hazards? 2) Variability: How
is the Earth’s surface being transformed
by naturally occurring tectonic and climatic processes? 3) Forcing: What are the
dynamics of the Earth’s interior and how
do these forces drive change at the Earth’s
surface? 4) Response: How is global sea
level affected by natural variability and
human induced change in the Earth System? NNH10ZDA001N-ESI (GG 7/19/

address and eliminate health disparities.
This FOA issued by the National Heart,
Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, solicits Research Education (R25) applications from institutions/
organizations to promote diversity in
undergraduate and health professional
student populations by providing shortterm research education support to stimulate career development in cardiovascular,
pulmonary, and hematologic diseases
research. Only one application per health
professional school may be submitted for
a given receipt date. Although a university may have more than one Short-Term
Research Education Program to Increase
Diversity in Health-Related Research,
they may not be in the same school. RFAHL-11-024 (NIHG 7/16/10)

and Behavioral Datasets in Aging (R03)
(NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA), issued by the National Institute on
Aging (NIA), is seeking small grant
(R03) applications to conduct secondary
analysis of social and behavioral data in
aging. Specifically, NIA seeks applicants
to: 1) stimulate and facilitate secondary
analysis of data related to dynamics of
health and disability, cognition, psychosocial and sociodemographic factors, genetics, and biomarkers, long term care,
caregiving, behavioral medicine, retirement, economic status; 2) provide support
for preliminary projects using secondary
analysis that could lead to subsequent
applications for other research grant
award mechanisms; 3) provide support
for analyses of new databases and experimental modules for purposes such as
informing the design and content of future
study waves; and 4) provide support for
pilot research on under-utilized databases.

HEALTH & LIFE SCIENCES
29-10 Short-Term Research Education
Program to Increase Diversity in
Health-Related Research (R25) (NIH)
(HHS)
The NIH recognizes a unique and compelling need to promote diversity in the
biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social
sciences research workforce. The NIH
expects efforts to diversify the workforce
to lead to the recruitment of the most talented researchers from all groups; to
improve the quality of the educational and
training environment; to balance and
broaden the perspective in setting
research priorities; to improve the ability
to recruit subjects from diverse backgrounds into clinical research protocols;

29-13 SBE Doctoral Dissertation
Research Improvement Grants (NSF)
The National Science Foundation’s Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), Division of Social and
Economic Sciences (SES), Division of
Science Resources Statistics (SRS), and
the SBE Office of Multidisciplinary
Activities (SMA) award grants to doctoral
students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants provide
funds for items not normally available
through the student’s university. Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant datagathering projects and to conduct field
research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible.
Proposals are judged on the basis of their
scientific merit, including the theoretical
importance of the research question and
the appropriateness of the proposed data
and methodology to be used in addressing
the question. NSF 06-605 (GG 6/25/10)
