Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice Provost for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin or by
at least two months prior to the sponsor
deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program. Currently

GENERAL
10-1 Research Coordination Networks
in Biological Sciences (RCN) (NSF)
The goal of this program is to encourage
and foster interactions among scientists to
create new research directions or advance
a field. Innovative ideas for implementing
novel networking strategies are especially
encouraged. Groups of investigators will
be supported to communicate and coordinate their research, training and educational activities across disciplinary,
organizational, institutional, and geographical boundaries. The proposed networking
activities should have a theme as a focus of
its collaboration. The focus could be on a
broad research question, a specific group
of organisms, or particular technologies or
approaches. NSF 06-567 (GG 7/11/08)

10-2 Resident Instruction Grants
Program for Institutions of Higher
Education in Insular Areas (RIIA)
Vol. 18, No. 10
EDUCATION
(USDA)
CSREES requests applications for the
Resident Instruction Grants Program for
Institutions of Higher Education in Insular Areas (RIIA) for fiscal year (FY)
2009 to strengthen the capacity of Institutions of Higher Education in Insular
Areas to carry out resident instruction,
curriculum, and teaching programs in the
food and agricultural sciences, and to
improve their ability to meet their unique
needs. Food and agricultural sciences
include programs in agriculture, food and
fiber, renewable energy and natural
resources, forestry, aquaculture, veterinary medicine, family and consumer sciences, home economics, nutrition and
dietetics, rural human ecology, rural economic and community development, and
other higher education activities and
fields of study related to the production,
processing, marketing, distribution, conservation, utilization, consumption,
research, and development of food and
agriculturally-related products and services. Applicants are encouraged to submit a consortium project application that
builds linkages among Insular Area Institutions and with other institutions
(including other colleges and universities) having a significant, demonstrable
commitment to higher education programs in the food and agricultural sciences and to each specific subject area
where grants funds are requested.

ARTS & HUMANITIES
10-3 History of Art Grants Program
(Kress)
The History of Art grant program supports scholarly projects that will enhance
the appreciation and understanding of
European art and architecture. Grants are
awarded to projects that create and disseminate specialized knowledge, including archival projects, development and
dissemination of scholarly databases,
documentation projects, museum exhibitions and publications, photographic
campaigns, scholarly catalogues and
publications, and technical and scientific
studies. Grants are also awarded for
activities that permit art historians to
share their expertise through international exchanges, professional meetings,
conferences, symposia, consultations, the
presentation of research, and other professional events. (TGA 2/09)

10-4 Recreational Programs (ED)
The purpose of the Recreational Programs
is to provide individuals with disabilities
with recreational activities and related
experiences to aid in their employment,
mobility, socialization, independence, and
community integration. The local recreation projects that are funded under this
program will continue after Federal assistance ends. Under the State plan vocational rehabilitation services must be
provided to assist individuals with disabilities, including youths with disabilities transitioning from school to work, to
achieve an employment outcome; therefore, services provided under Recreational Programs also must be directed to
these adults and transitioning youths.

10-5 Antarctic Research (NSF)
Scientific research and operational support of that research are the principal
activities supported by the United States
Government in Antarctica. The goals are
to expand fundamental knowledge of the
region, to foster research on global and
regional problems of current specific
importance, and to use Antarctica as a
platform from which to support research.
The U.S. Antarctic Program provides support for field work only when a compelling justification exists for doing the work
in Antarctica (i.e., the work can only be
done, or is best done, in Antarctica). The
program also supports antarctic-related
analytical research performed at home
organizations. NSF 09-536

10-6 NSF Earth Sciences Postdoctoral
Fellowships (EAR-PF) (NSF)
The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR)
awards Postdoctoral Fellowships to
highly qualified investigators within 3
years of obtaining their PhD to carry out
an integrated program of independent
research and education. The research and
education plans of each fellowship must
address scientific questions within the
scope of EAR disciplines. The program
supports researchers for a period of up to
2 years with fellowships that can be taken
to the institution or national facility of
their choice. The program is intended to
recognize beginning investigators of significant potential, and provide them with
experience in research and education that
will establish them in leadership positions

10-7 Prostate Cancer New
Investigator Award (DOD)
The New Investigator Award supports
independent PIs in the early stages of
their careers and requires a designated
collaborator. The PCRP seeks PIs who
have innovative, high-impact ideas or
new technologies applicable to prostate
cancer research, prevention, detection,
diagnosis, or treatment. The PCRP seeks
applications from all areas of basic, preclinical, behavioral, and epidemiological
research that are responsive to one or
more of the FY09 PCRP focus areas.
PCRP Focus Areas are: Imaging; Biomarkers; Therapy; Genetics; Tumor Biology;
and Survivorship. W81XWH-09-PCRPNIA (GG 2/10/09)

10-8 Pharmacogenomics Research
Network (U01/U19) (NIH)
The purpose of this funding opportunity
announcement is to allow new and
renewal applications for research groups
to compete to become part of the Pharmacogenomics Research Network (PGRN),
and to create network resources that serve
the entire PGRN. The PGRN is a consortium of interdisciplinary groups with a
core mission to conduct research into
understanding the genetic basis of variable drug responses, both therapeutic and
adverse. The scientific objectives of the
research network include definition of the
pressing problems for safe and effective
use of medications, establishment of truly
cross-disciplinary research groups, application of the most appropriate genetic and
genomic methods to important sample
collections, discovery and replication
studies that identify variation in critical
genes and biological pathways, elucidation of the functional consequences of
genetic variation for the drugs being studied, and understanding the clinical implications of genotyping to predict drug
responses. RFA-GM-10-001 (NIHG 1/30/

Research Award (IIRA) supports basic
and clinically oriented research that will:
provide insight into the development of
NF and related diseases, Result in substantial improvements over today’s
approach to the diagnosis and treatment
of NF and Schwannomatosis, and
Enhance the quality of life of persons
with those diseases. The FY09 NFRP
encourages research proposals that specifically address the critical needs of the NF
community in the following areas: Complications of NF with high mortality such
as neoplasms and cerebrovascular abnormalities; Complications of NF with high

Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of
Elderly Individuals and Residents of
Residential Care Facilities (DOJ)
The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of
Justice Programs, National Institute of
Justice is seeking applications for funding
in the areas of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elderly individuals and residents
of residential care facilities. NIJ is accepting applications that address gaps in our
ability to prevent, detect, and respond to
abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elderly
individuals and people who live in residential care facilities. Priority research
areas include studies that: Perform rigorous evaluation of programs designed to
prevent, deter, detect, investigate, prosecute, or otherwise respond to abuse,
neglect, and exploitation of elderly individuals and people who live in residential
care facilities; Projects that evaluate the
efficacy of Adult Protective Services
(APS) practices, elder fatality review
teams, elder forensic centers, and courtbased programs; Examine risk and protective factors associated with the victimization and/or perpetration of abuse, neglect,
and exploitation; Explore typologies of
abusers and abusive situations. (GG 2/10/
