Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice Provost for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin or by
at least two months prior to the sponsor
deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program. Currently

of Science, Office of Biological and
Environmental Research (OBER), and
the U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA), Cooperative State Research,
Education, and Extension Service
(CSREES), announce their interest in
receiving applications for genomicsbased research that will lead to the
improved use of biomass and plant feedstocks for the production of fuels such as
ethanol or renewable chemical feedstocks. Specifically, applications are
sought for fundamental research on
plants that will improve biomass characteristics, biomass yield, or sustainability.
Systems biology approaches to identify
genetic indicators enabling plants to be
efficiently bred or manipulated, or
research that yields fundamental knowledge of the structure, function and organization of plant genomes leading to
improved feedstock characterization and
sustainability are also encouraged. DEPS02-09ER09-03 (GG 11/12/08)

46-6 Residencies for Writers,
Composers, and Artists (MacDowell)
The Macdowell Colony was founded in
Peterborough, New Hampshire, in 1907.
The Colony’s mission today, as it was
then, is to nurture the arts by offering creative individuals of the highest talent an
inspiring environment in which to produce enduring works of the imagination.
More than 250 writers, composers, visual
artists, photographers, printmakers, filmmakers, architects, interdisciplinary artists, and those collaborating on creative
works come to the Colony each year from
all parts of the United States and abroad.
Colonists receive room, board, and the
exclusive use of a studio. In addition to
ideal working conditions, artists-in-residence benefit from the experience of living in a community of exceptional artists.

46-7 Global Expansion for Artists
(Mid Atlantic)
With support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation and the Trust for Mutual
Understanding, the Mid Atlantic Arts
Foundation has announced a major
expansion of the USArtists International,
a national initiative solely dedicated to
promoting the work of American performing artists abroad. Formerly limited
to supporting dance and music ensembles
invited to perform at international festivals, USAI will now encompass festivals
anywhere in the world outside the United
States. The program also will be open to

ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS
& PHYSICAL SCIENCES
46-8 Deep Underground Science and
Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL S4)
(NSF)
The particle physics, cosmology/astrophysics and nuclear physics communities
have identified the need for a deep underground laboratory infrastructure in order
to address some of the most compelling,
transformational questions at the frontier
of their disciplines. The Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is proposed to address the
need for such an underground infrastructure, and is in the planning stages at the
National Science Foundation for possible
consideration for funding as a Major
Research Equipment and Facilities Construction (MREFC) project. If approved
or funded as an MREFC project, DUSEL
would include funds to support construction of both the facility and its infrastructure, the design of which is supported
through the DUSEL Solicitation 3 award
and the suite of DUSEL experiments that
this infrastructure would host. This solicitation (DUSEL Solicitation 4, S4) invites
proposals to develop project plans for
specific candidate experiments that could
be considered for the suite of DUSEL
experiments. NSF 09-500 (GG 10/7/08)

46-9 Grant Opportunities for
Academic Liaison with Industry
(GOALI) (NSF)
Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison with Industry (GOALI) promotes university-industry partnerships by making
project funds or fellowships/traineeships
available to support an eclectic mix of
industry-university linkages. Special
interest is focused on affording the opportunity for: Faculty, postdoctoral fellowships, and students to conduct research
and gain experience in an industrial setting; Industrial scientists and engineers to
bring industry’s perspective and integrative skills to academe; and Interdisciplinary university-industry teams to conduct
research projects. GOALI seeks to fund
transformative research that lies beyond
that which industry would normally fund.

environmental factors at different states
of development across inbred strains of
mice including using, but not limited to,
selective breeding strategies, recombinant
inbred mice, the collaborative cross, and

Society for Research in Child Development is seeking applications for the
upcoming Policy Fellowships for the
2009-2010 term. There are currently two
types of Fellowships: Congressional Fellowships and Executive Branch Fellowships. Both Fellowships provide exciting
opportunities for researchers to come to
Washington, DC and use developmental
science outside of the academic setting to
inform public policy. The goals of the fellowships are: 1) to contribute to the effective use of scientific knowledge about
child development in the formation of
public policy; 2) to educate the scientific
community about the development of
public policy; and 3) to establish a more
effective liaison between developmental
scientists and the Federal policy-making
mechanisms. (TGA 9/08)

46-12 Secondary Data Analyses for
Substance Abuse Research (R21/R33)
(NIH)
This funding opportunity, issued by the
National Institute on Drug Abuse invites
Phased innovation (R21/R33) grant applications from organizations/institutions
that propose to conduct secondary analyses of rich biological data sets related to
substance abuse research and to advance
data and computational infrastructure relevant to the proposed analyses. Applications will submit a single application
organized into two phases, beginning with
discussion of the R21 phase followed by
discussion of the R33 phase. Applicants
using only the R21mechanism or only the
