Scenarios: Tour groups
You are with a tour group who are not
behaving! There are stragglers, not everyone
is listening and it’s raining! What do you do?
Your tour group are very demanding. There
are parents asking tough questions at every
stop and people who want to see all different
areas and you are running out of time. What
next?
Scenarios: our discussion
Plan ahead for the weather. Think of a route which
means you can spend time chatting inside
Make sure answers to any questions that could be
relevant to everyone are relayed to the group.
Answer questions as you move to the next stop on your
tour.
Make sure your group know where you will be visiting
and let them know they can ask for other places
Speak loudly and clearly and make it clear to the group
where you are going next.
Let them know there is time for questions at the end
Talk to them about their interest and aims
Body Language
Remember to make eye contact as you are
talking to people and include everyone
Stand straight, keep your head up and smile.
Make sure your body language is ‘open’.
Pay attention to everyone, make sure that
people know you are listening to them.
Speak clearly; try not to speak too quickly or
too quietly.
Make sure everyone can see you.
Working with children
Child protection – make sure they stay in a group, never
be alone with one child
Do not give out your email adress, phone or social media
Be aware of your audience:
– what might they not already know about the course
– Use appropriate language so they can understand –
keep it simple
– Be aware of their background before you talk about
yours
Their attention span may not be long, make sure you are
aware when your group are flagging
Sharing your experiences
Be positive and enthusiastic
Represent the university as a whole
Show your love for PPE
Understand your audience
Direct people to where they
can find answers
