INTRODUCTION
In another stunning year, Kansas State University received a record total of $52,310,833 during FY97
as awards in support of research. Awards, 735 in number, were made by sponsors external to the university in direct support of the research and creative activities of our faculty, primarily through the
competitive grants process. This record level of awards received is an increase of $6.35 million over
the total received for FY96, resuming the dramatic upsurge in awards made to the faculty that started
early this decade. K-State is now ranked 76th in expenditures among public research universities.
When the $52.3 million competitive award total is combined with direct appropriations for research
from federal and state sources, principally in agriculture, the total research budget for the university is
$82,426,737. This level of funding demonstrates clearly the high degree of competitiveness of the KState faculty nationally—as the majority of awards are made by federal agencies through national
competitions where success rates for funding new proposals are now typically as low as 1 in 10 of the
proposals submitted.
These funds represent the majority of funds available to further the research and graduate education
mission of the university, but they also have benefits far reaching beyond that to benefit the citizens of Kansas. For example, the
awards made to faculty are instrumental in building world-class research facilities essential for educating our students at the stateof-the-art in science and engineering programs at K-State. These facilities, coupled with the exciting new capabilities associated with
them, are vital to ensuring students are well educated, and consequently of high value to the industrial leaders in Kansas and the
nation. But these funds also have special merit of their own to benefit Kansans in other direct measurable ways. For example, these
research funds generally represent new monies coming into the state, and, as these are mainly used in hiring personnel, they increase
the taxable wage base on par with the leading industries of the state grossing in excess of $50 million annually.
It is generally anticipated the pioneering research programs frequently yield new knowledge that advances the science and engineering fields in profound ways, but special situations also arise where that advance has the potential for a new commercializable
product. To capitalize on this by bringing the fruits of university research to the market, the university must first secure patent protection for such inventions, which, while a costly and time consuming process, has direct economic consequences and benefits to
the taxpayers. During the current decade, there has been a major increase in the number of patents applied for and awarded to KState faculty by the U.S. Patent Office, paralleling closely the dramatic increases in research awards received. Patents awarded to
the faculty through KSURF, the KSU Research Foundation, acting as the agent of the university, total 60 patents in the past five years.
A listing of these patents is provided in this report to recognize the excellence of the faculty in this creative endeavor.
While it had been traditional to license patents awarded to outside corporations in return for royalties, K-State initiated a new strategy several years ago with the creation of MACC, the Mid-America Commercialization Corporation. MACC is formed as a tripartite
entity of the university, the City of Manhattan and the State of Kansas through the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation (KTEC).
Under contract with KSURF, MACC either seeks to license this intellectual property to national leaders in the specific technology, or,
when it is more beneficial, to use that technology as the basis for forming a new company in Kansas to develop and market new
products associated with that patent. During the past year, MACC has successfully created new companies based on K-State intellectual property. Nantek is one of those companies, based on the technology of nanoparticle chemicals that are especially efficient
as destructive adsorbents for a variety of hazardous chemicals. Nantek has now secured major Small Business Innovation Research
(SBIR) development awards from federal agencies to advance the design and development of these processes and to bring them to
the production stages. Nantek has also recently been selected as the general “Technology of the Year” recipient by the Silicon Prairie
Technology Association in Kansas City.
While this report focuses on one specific aspect of the excellence of the faculty at K-State, there are many other indicators of the
successes and accomplishments of our faculty, and these are recognized in other, more appropriate, forums. However, it may be
appropriate to single out here several special recognitions the University does bestow on its exceptional faculty. In particular, the
University honors two faculty annually with the Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award, while others are accorded lasting recognition through selection as a University or Regents Distinguished Professor. Both are lifetime appointments. As these awards and distinguished titles represent truly outstanding contributions to the university and to their professions, faculty who have been so honored
are listed in this report.
Lastly, many of the significant accomplishments of our faculty in research and creative activities, including those mentioned above,
are described in considerably more detail on our robust website at http://www.ksu.edu/ResearchGrad/
