GENERAL
18-1 Sloan Research Fellowships
(Sloan)
Sloan Research Fellowships is by far the
oldest program of the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation, although those who receive
the grants are among the youngest
researchers the Foundation assists. The
Sloan Research Fellowships were established to provide support and recognition
to scientists, often in their first appointments to university faculties, who were
endeavoring to set up laboratories and
establish their independent research
projects with little or no outside support.
Candidates must hold a tenure track (or
equivalent) position at a college, university, or other degree-granting institution in
the United States or Canada. Tenure track
faculty positions at the candidate’s institution must include a yearly teaching
requirement. Candidates must hold a Ph.D.
(or equivalent) in chemistry, computational or evolutionary molecular biology,
computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, ocean sciences, physics,
18-2 NSF Scholarships in Science,
Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (S-STEM) (NSF)
This program makes grants to institutions of higher education to support
scholarships for academically talented
students demonstrating financial need,
enabling them to enter the STEM workforce or STEM graduate school following completion of an associate,
baccalaureate, or graduate-level degree
in science, technology, engineering or
mathematics disciplines. Grantee institutions are responsible for selecting scholarship recipients, reporting demographic
information about student scholars, and
managing the S-STEM project at the
institution. The program does not make
scholarship awards directly to students.
An Institution may submit one proposal
from each constituent school or college
that awards degrees in an eligible field.

18-3 ACE Centers: Supporting
Science Solutions (EPA)
The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to
Achieve Results (STAR) program,
announces the Request for Applications
(RFA), Air, Climate, and Energy (ACE)
Centers. EPA is seeking to support
research that will systematically inform
policy makers at state and local levels
regarding the deployment of innovative
approaches to enable implementation of
air pollution control strategies. This
research aims to achieve the greatest
public health benefits possible by reducing exposure to harmful air pollution.
This program features four main research
topics: Enhancing understanding of spatial and temporal differences in individual pollutants and pollutant mixtures
within and across different areas (including urban areas, or between urban, suburban, and rural areas) or geographic
regions; identifying and improving the
characterization of the most important
factors contributing to regional or city-tocity differences or similarities in air pollution and health impacts beyond topography and meteorology; improving the
ability to understand and project how
these contributing factors and differences
may change over the next one to several
decades; and advancing scientific knowledge and tools needed to develop robust
strategies for air pollution control to
improve public and environmental health
under a variety of conditions, including
consideration of approaches for addressing climate change preparedness. EPAG2014-STAR-J1

Quality Program (NIWQP) is to contribute to the improvement of the quality and
conservation of our Nation’s water
resources through research, education,
and extension activities. Projects funded
through this program will work to solve
water resource problems by advancing
and disseminating the knowledge base
available to agricultural, rural, and urbanizing communities. Funded projects

ARTS & HUMANITIES
18-6 Humanities Program (Delmas)
The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation
intends to further the humanities along a
broad front, supporting projects which
address the concerns of the historical studia humanitatis: a humanistic education
rooted in the great traditions of the past;
the formation of human beings according
to cultural, moral, and aesthetic ideals
derived from that past; and the ongoing
debate over how these ideals may best be
conceived and realized. Programs in the
following areas are eligible: history;
archaeology; literature; languages, both
classical and modern; philosophy; ethics;
comparative religion; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; and those
aspects of the social sciences which share
the content and the methods of humanistic
disciplines. The Foundations welcomes
projects that cross the boundaries between
humanistic disciplines and explore the
connections between the humanities and
other areas of scholarship. (TGA 5/14)
