Hiking

Switzerland’s mountainous terrain offers numerous great hiking opportunities. From the Jura Mountains just outside Lausanne to Appenzell in the east, there are hiking options virtually everywhere in Switzerland. In the spring and summer, there are numerous wildflowers and what sounds like wind chimes in the distance is actually several cowbells dangling from the cows’ necks as they go about their business. I’ve found that in general, hiking guides in

Switzerland tend to underrate the hikes difficulty. I feel like the Bernese Oberland region offers the best hikes.

Some hikes that I’ve done and recommend include:

Grindelwald Gletscherschlucht - Männlichen, The North

Face Trail in Mürren and the Dole in the Jura Mountains.

Get involved with Xchange

Xchange is an organization created to help exchange students get the most out of their stays in Lausanne.

They plan parties, cheap travel opportunities and pubnights each Wednesday. These travel opportunities and pubnights are a great way to meet other exchange students and explore Switzerland.

Some travel opportunities include a trip to Ticino, a visit to the absinthe factory in Neuchatel and a trip to

Zurich to participate in a huge party.

Canyoning

If you’re a thrill seeker and like high adrenaline sports, you should try canyoning. Canyoning involves traversing a canyon by means of hiking, jumping and rappelling. Your choice plunge into the pool of water below or to rappel off the ledge depends on conditions and how daring you are feeling. Switzerland is known for having easily accessible canyons for people of all skill or thrill seeking levels.

Canyoning is easiest done in Interlaken through one of the several adventure sports outfitters.

Price: The price varies depending on the difficulty and duration. Easier canyons start around 100 CHF and more difficult canyons cost around 150 CHF.

Sledging

Sledging (sledding) is one of Switzerland’s great winter activities but it’s unlike anything you are used to in the United States. Instead of going down a hill, you get to go down an entire mountain. Many ski resorts have special trails specifically for sledging.

Instead of walking to the top of the trail, you have to take a ski lift because the trails are so long and start so high up the mountain. Switzerland is the home to the world’s longest sledging run, which is 15 km and found in Grindelwald. In my opinion, sledging is best enjoyed racing friends.

Price: At Les Diablerets, sledge rental costs 12-20 CHF, depending on sledge type, and 14 CHF per trip in the ski lift to the top.

Christmas Markets

During November, mini chalets start being constructed for the Christmas season. These chalets, scattered throughout Place St. François are a fun area to come enjoy a variety of winter foods and beverages such as nuts and hot wine and do some Christmas shopping. The chalets sell items such as scarves, hats, crafts and decorations. The market in Lausanne is nice but it does not compare to the much larger Christmas market in Montreux. In Montreux, chalets line Grand

Rue along the lake and offer a greater variety.

Mountaintop Views in the Bernese Oberland

If you want great views of the Alps from mountaintops, you should consider taking the Schilthorn cable car to the top at

10,000 ft. or take a train to Europe’s highest train station, the

Jungfraujoch at 11,300 ft. At the top of the Schilthorn is an observation platform and a rotating restaurant, which surprisingly, has reasonably priced food by Swiss standards.

At Jungfraujoch, there is an observation platform, restaurant, and summer skiing available. Make sure to check the weather before going to either of these places because clouds and snow will ruin your experience and make you grumpy because of the cost.

Price: To get to the Schilthorn from Stechelberg costs 92 CHF, or 72 CHF from Mürren.

To get to Jungfraujoch from Lauterbrunnen 161 CHF

Geneva Motor Show

If fancy cars are your thing, you should check out the

Geneva motor show, which takes place for about a week during March. The show features all of the big names such as Ferrari, Bentley and Lamborghini to name a few, and a number of other companies, some of which, you’ve probably never heard of. Many companies, that sell cars we can actually afford, debut their new models as well.

Price: 16 CHF for adult entry, 25 CHF roundtrip with

½ fare card to Geneva Airport, where the expo center is located.

Luzern

Luzern is one of Switzerland’s best cities and is well worth a visit. Lake Luzern, the Reuss River and its bridges give this city a pleasant ambiance. Things to do here include boat tours on the lake, see a giant lion sculpture carved into a cliff, view a 360 degree panorama painting, and enjoy the cities pleasant waterfront location. The Rosengart Collection features art from Picasso and the Swiss Transport

Museum is nice to visit if you are interested in cars, airplanes and trains. Luzern is about a 2.5 hour train ride from Lausanne and costs 61 CHF roundtrip with a ½ fare card.

Interlaken

Interlaken received its name because of its location, between two lakes. While there is not much to actually be done in Interlaken, it serves as a gateway to the mountains and all of your outdoor activities.

The train ride to Interlaken is incredible with views of the mountains and their reflections’ in the lakes.

Interlaken is the host to most of the outdoor outfitting companies for your adventure sports be it: rafting, canyoning, sky diving, paragliding, ice climbing and many more. If any of these activities sound interesting to you, Interlaken is the place to go.

If you’d rather be on a mountain, go to one of the surrounding villages such as Mürren, Grindelwald or

Gimmelwald.
