Dental Hygiene students celebrated their graduation on May 22, 2015. When the program faced budget cuts, long time
Cabrillo supporters and alumni, Richard and Theresa Crocker (pictured center) helped the program with a $100,000 gift. This
gift allowed the program time to find new revenue streams in the face of budget cuts, which kept the valuable career program
on track to admit a new cohort.

We are pleased to announce that through the generosity of our community, the Cabrillo College Foundation has provided Cabrillo College and its students with $2,973,693 in total support for the 2014-2015 academic year. This Annual Report highlights
some of the wonderful programs and people who have been supported through these gifts.

Cabrillo Advancement Program (CAP)

CAP guides hundreds of middle and high
school students toward college. Annually,
4 5 since 1991, 60 at-risk sixth graders in Santa
Cruz County are selected to receive counseling, after-school tutoring, family outreach
and support for academic development
throughout their 6th through 12th grades.
Breaking down financial barriers
to help students afford college
Once they graduate from high school, all
CAP students receive $2,000 for their first
and second years at Cabrillo. Last year, CAP
students exceeded the college-going rate
by 28% compared to their peers.
Each summer, students come and sample
some of the classes available to them
in college, from Culinary Arts to Sports
Medicine; passions are ignited that lead to
a better future.

Scholarship. The Ow Family has been providing these scholarships to incoming
Cabrillo students for over 25 years. Last year the Ow family generously awarded
92 local ethnic minority high school seniors a $500 scholarship to Cabrillo.

Pat and Rowland Rebele have been supporting Cabrillo students since 1986, providing nearly $500,000 in gifts to date.
Pat and Rowland are particularly passionate about the Journalism program, awarding stipends to students to intern with
local businesses from the Santa Cruz Sentinel to KUSP radio station. Students receive hands-on learning to propel them in
their future careers.
One such recipient is Tony Nuñez, who has been working the last three years as the sports editor for the Register Pajaronian after
learning the ropes during his Rebele sponsored internship. Tony credits his time at Cabrillo for helping him land his dream job.
Women’s Educational Success (WES)
“I support WES because of its straightforward, uncomplicated commitment to, and support of,
our local students at Cabrillo College. Awarding students in sudden financial need, quickly and
with little bureaucracy, can be a difference maker in helping them complete their education.” — Leola Lapides, WES Committee co-chair
How much does it cost to follow your passion? Just ask Thais Sousa, a culinary student at Cabrillo who dreams
of starting a catering company. When she needed money to help buy knives and her uniform, her instructor and WES Advisor,
Sue Slater, requested funds from the WES program, which issues small grants to help students through financial emergencies.
Within two weeks, Thais had the money she needed to stay in school. “I thought my savings would be enough, but everything
cost so much more than I thought.”
The WES Committee, known as Best Friends, raise money annually to help support this endowment program. Donations of $250
or more were matched by gifts from the Sharanam Foundation, Rachel Wedeen, and Tiffany Hammer. This year a record breaking
$57,000 will be awarded to students with an emergency need.

Funds to expand this facility will allow more

emphasizing the value of education. Wanting to pursue his passion for robotics, Angel has struggled to pay his own way. Luckily,
Margarita established the Placida Alvarez de Carrillo Scholarship in honor of her mother who never had the opportunity to go to
school, but valued education above all. Angel is the first recipient of this new scholarship and is on course to surpass his own
expectations.
