Developments and Designing the Wet
Demonstrator Project"
(Dubai, UAE, 17-18 April 2016)

Contents
• Early stage project development in support of SMART
Cable business case
– Route Design (Candidate Routes)
– Sensor / Repeater Location and Analysis
– Permitting Considerations
– Future Planning
Route Design
• Business Case Drivers
– Route Length
– Number of Repeaters
• Number of Sensors
– Burial and Armoring Quantities
– Candidate Routes
– Seabed Analysis for Sensor Placement Locations
– Optimization of total project cost parameters (burial,
armoring, etc.
Sensor Locations
• Early stage (desktop study) assessment of sensor
locations
– Bathymetry
• Water depth
• Slopes
– Sediment Type
– Geologic Features
– Identify Sensor Locations (delineated in Route Position List)
Permitting Considerations
• Commercial vs. Scientific Systems
– Permitting for Implementation vs. Permitting for
Ownership
•
•
•
•
Survey
Installation
Maintenance
Unknowns
– Begin project / ownership permitting as early as possible to
ensure successful project implementation schedule
Burial Considerations
• System Burial is required for essentially all shore
areas
• Burial to occur potentially out to 1000-1500m water
depth
– May result in first senor being far off shore
• Question:
– Will SMART systems be able be buried and still effective?
– If not, will there be a loss of some critical inshore data (water level
changes in shore)?
Future Planning – a way forward
– Identify the following
• Candidate routes to develop business plan parameters
• Detailed assessment of sensor locations delineated at Route
Position List (RPL) level
• Optimize requirements for cable burial and armoring (protection)
to control cost
• Engage in permitting process early
– Early engagement in route planning to support business
case planning
