Earthquake resilient precast structures:

Learn from the past; Prepare for the future

Dr Georgia Kremmyda, Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Warwick

ABSTRACT

Since mid-20 th century, the share of industrial prefabrication of concrete structures has been increasing continuously in the construction market worldwide. A structure can be composed solely by precast structural members or precast structural members can be partially introduced to structures which are primarily constructed in-situ. The main structural challenge that arises in seismic design is related to the behaviour of the connections between the structural members under cyclic loading and their influence on the total behaviour of the structure. In this seminar, experience from the performance of precast structures in praxis under severe earthquake events will be discussed. Comprehensive research projects of the last decade which yielded important results on the behaviour of precast structures will be presented. The seminar highlights the importance of integrating advanced numerical micro-modelling and large-scale experimental evaluation towards the development of structural details and associated design rules for the future versions of codes of practice.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Georgia Kremmyda completed her undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD studies at the

National Technical University of Athens, Greece. She was a member of the Laboratory for

Earthquake Engineering for more than 10 years where she worked on the experimental and numerical assessment of the seismic behaviour of precast reinforced concrete (RC) structures.

Meanwhile, she was Design Coordinator and Head of R&D groups in construction and consulting companies leading in the field of precast RC structures. Between 2010 and 2014 she was Lecturer at the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education of Athens in the

Laboratory of Earthquake Engineering. She joined Warwick at the School of Engineering in April

2015 as Discipline Degree Leader of the Civil Engineering Stream .

This seminar is open to all and refreshments are provided. For more information, contact Dr Stefano
