Job Title: Learning Officer
Salary : £25,000 p.a Pro Rata (£10,800 p.a).
Funder: This post is funded through a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund
Hours: 16 hours per week (annualised over year predominantly during school term time. The post
may suit someone with school age children as the working day will roughly follow the school day
with the option of annualised time-off during some of the main school holidays.)
Duration: Fixed term contract for 2.5 years.
Responsible to: Museum Manager, Directors and Trustees of Sheringham Museum
Responsible for: Volunteers, Freelancers
Liaises with:
All museum stakeholders including Directors, Trustees, Volunteers, Scira Offshore Energy, UEA
Intern and School / residential centre stakeholders.
Role Summary:
The delivery of a high quality face-to-face educational service to Primary & Secondary Schools,
their Teachers, Family Groups, Universities and “Life Long” learners in accordance with the
museum Atlantic 75 Project Activity Plan.
Main Responsibilities:
Roughly 50% time allocation: Teaching 1 session a day, 3-4 days a week (term time)
 To run high quality hands-on education sessions, with a focus on the STEM subjects and
curriculum, for schools and education groups ranging from nursery to adult education,
across all of the collection themes.
Roughly 40% time allocation: After teaching day and during the non teaching day (term
time). Will increase during holiday time.





To help promote and evaluate existing history sessions to school audiences.
To develop additional session/s for secondary school audiences across the curriculum,
specifically with regard to STEM and ITC subjects.
To explore and promote use of the archive collections, particularly for school and group
audiences.
To foster links and partnerships with project stakeholders (SCIRA Offshore Energy, UEA,
STEMnet, Residential Centres)
To facilitate the booking process for future visits, including conducting pre-visit tours.
Roughly 10% time allocation: (will increase during holiday time)
 To participate in the care and development of the handling objects and teaching collections,
ensuring the proper documentation and storage of museum items.
 To assist with the management of a daily rota system of volunteers.
 To act as a building keyholder, taking operational responsibility for the museum site.
 To assist in the preparation of risk assessments and ensure site health and safety is
compliant with regulations.
 To develop and lead family holiday workshops.
 Any other reasonable duties as requested by the Museum Manager or Directors.

Skills & Competencies
Essential
1. Excellent verbal and written skills, particularly communicating effectively with
teachers and pupils and other stakeholders.
2. Strong interest in interpreting Maritime history, geography and STEM curriculum activities.
3. Ability to work successfully as part of a team.
4. Good organisational and administrative skills.
5. Computer literate, preferably with knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
6. Ability to carry out light manual handling tasks such as moving handling objects, tensa-barriers,
tables and chairs.
7. Commitment to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities policy.
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
8. Hold a degree or an equivalent qualification.
9. A proven track record of effective class management within a classroom or museum.
10. Experience of teaching to all abilities within the 4-16 age range.
11. An in-depth knowledge of the National Curriculum and other statutory education requirements
across Key Stages 1-4.
12. A working knowledge of the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) curriculum or
experience working in a relevant STEM sector role.
13. Experience of interpreting museum collections or other interpretation work
14. Experience of using objects to support learning (further assessed at interview
stage through interactive presentation with object/s).
15. Experience of developing and delivering high quality learning resource materials for pupils
and teachers.
16.Experience of best practice when working with people with disabilities or those requiring
additional access support and an understanding of equal opportunities framework.
