Conversion of Derelict Farm Complex
into Four Dwellings
Entrant:
Robert Lord (Agent), Bryan Williams (Owner)
Manor Farm Barns lie directly to the east of the Grade II Listed
Manor House. The project involved the complete restoration
and refurbishment of the complex of agricultural buildings into
four new dwellings. The site holds a prominent position on the
entrance to the village and junction of The Street with Snoring
Road. The barns had been lying vacant for a significant period of
time and were in an extremely poor state of repair. The scale
and quality of this conversion scheme is particularly note
worthy.
The alterations to each barn have been carefully thought
through. New openings into the historic fabric have been kept to
a minimum. Where new openings were required, conservation
style rooflights have been restricted to the inner slopes of the
barns. The large areas of uninterrupted roofscape which are the
dominating feature of the complex have been retained.
Internally areas of full height space have been incorporated
allowing for the original scale of the barns to still be read.
The use of reclaimed Norfolk pan tiles, lime mortar and all new
timber windows is another indicator of the quality of the
conversion. The treatment of the exterior garden and courtyard
spaces has been considered carefully, there’s an informal
appearance to the access ways and parking which has
contributed to the character ands setting of the site.
Overall this scheme has been extremely successful in bringing
this historic group of derelict barns back into use. The
sympathetic use of traditional materials and detailing has meant
the character and original charm of the barns has been retained.
