Karla Krueger (center) an instructor at the University of Northern Iowa, was
the featured presenter at the “Libraries, Literacy and Learning” session held on
April 15 at Grant Wood AEA.
Libraries, Literacy and Learning
by Melva Starr, GWAEA Media Specialist
The four workshops for Libraries, Literacy and Learning have been completed. Our
final session was on April 15, 2008. Karla Krueger, instructor at UNI, was our presenter
for the topic of Collection Development. Participants went through a practical, handson analysis of a section of their own collection as well as looking at policy, a collection
management cycle, the Wilson Core Collection materials, circulation, and budget. Setting up replacement cycles and looking at ways to advocate for our library programs
was also discussed. What the Iowa Administrative Code states regarding library program services and where district library programs fit into the Comprehensive School
Improvement or CSIP plans was addressed. Karla brought handouts of the summary
results for the 2007 School Library Survey and we looked at “Plans for Progress
Into the 21st Century: A Guide to Planning for School Library Media Programs,”
revised in 2004 by Becky Stover Johnson, teacher librarian at Jefferson High School
in Cedar Rapids.

you propose, or a super Web site you could
demonstrate for staff.
