As Peter was driving quickly along the road, he suddenly glimpsed a wisp
of greyish smoke on the blue horizon.
“Can that be a fire?” he asked. A silence in the car, none of his family
wishing to make any kind of guess. “Nothing to say?” asked Tom in a
slightly sharp tone.
“Well, Father,” answered William, the oldest of his children. “You have as
much right to guess as we do. What makes you think we should be able to
recognize that wisp of smoke better than you?”
“Don’t be cheeky, my lad,” protested Peter with a mocking smile. “You have
a bit more time to look at the scenery than I have. You may not have
noticed, but I have to pay attention at least to my driving, not to the
beautiful countryside.”
There followed loud laughter from Peter’s affectionate family.
Activity Nine
It was 7 one Sunday morning, very quiet on Miramar Bay, with all the
fishing boats pulled out of the sea and brought close to the white houses
round the bay. A few sailing boats were anchored near the shore, and there
was just a man with his dog, paddling along as he made for the southern
cliff.
