Dear Parents and Families,
One of Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is “begin with the end in mind.”
As your student begins their Michigan Tech experience, ultimately, the end result will be a
successful career in the industry of their choosing. Michigan Tech Career Services’ mission
is to work collaboratively with our campus community and corporate partners to help
your student develop their talents and communicate them to prospective employers. Our
programs are designed to:
• Help students explore and define their career interests
• Provide unique and engaging opportunities that allow students to begin building their
professional network
• Give students professional guidance in effectively communicating their talents
through their resumes, interview skills and other platforms such as LinkedIn
You are their number one support network, and our goal is to keep you updated on the
opportunities we will be providing your student to successfully launch and navigate a
successful career.
Sincerely,
Stephen Patchin, Director of Career Services
CAREER PREP
CAREER FEST
CareerFEST, held under the tent in the heart of campus,
provides a full month of activities to explore a career, network
with companies and prepare for the main event, the Career
Fair. Encourage your student to check the calendar and
attend as many events as possible.
• Have your resume reviewed at a Resume Blitz, participate in a mock interview, and attend a presentation to learn how to get a co-op or internship
• Meet the person who has the power to give you a job
• Start building your professional profile - start early and the end is easy
• Utilize Career Services to make the process easy, effective and enjoyable
• Meet with a Career Services Advisor for all things career-related
• Pursue co-ops or internships - some are available for first-year students
• Be sure your resume is college-ready
• Find out the inside scoop on one of the largest Career Fairs in the entire country
• Practice answering interview questions
• Find out how to best search for a co-op or internship
• Learn more about a variety of industries: Aerospace, Foundry, Automotive, Petroleum, Steel, Information Technology, and more!
• Get involved in a hands-on activity: tear down an engine, cook popcorn on a Cupola, or drive a vehicle fresh off the production line
• Have an informal conversation with a recruiter and leave a lasting impression - these recruiters remember an enthusiastic student
CAREER FAIR
NETWORKING
Students may think the resume is the key to a successful
job search, but even more important is making personal
connections and networking. Students should take
advantage of all the events leading up to the Career Fair,
because they are opportunities to build their personal
network.
• Know how to make the best first impression with your personal introduction at all the events
• Be sure your resume is up to date - attend a Resume Blitz or the Career Services Learning Center
• For the Career Fair, do your homework and dress professionally. Make sure to find out which companies you want to target at the event.

LEARNING CENTER
Peer coaches are available in our Career Services Learning Center. They
are upper-level Michigan Tech students who can provide your student the
best advice from another student’s perspective.
INDUSTRY DAYS
Industry Days are the perfect opportunity for your student
to learn more about the types of industries they can pursue
through interactive networking events. Students should visit
the tent between classes to find out what an industry is
like and meet a company representative.
Though first-year students may not think to make their career
development a priority, we want them to know it is never too early to
start. By starting early and working consistently on their career
development, students aren’t stressed finding a job when they
graduate; they are stressed because they have to choose which
job offer, of many, to accept!
