Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Application
Recognition of Prior Learning
Hunter TAFE Recognition of Prior Learning, RPL, enables you to get recognition for any skills
and knowledge that you may have gained through previous work or studies. This includes
any course completed at TAFE or other Registered Training Organisation’s, in the workplace
or through life experiences.
Instructions

Use this form if you wish to apply for Recognised Prior Learning (RPL). This form will
allow us to determine the type and extent of RPL you may be eligible for.

RPL is given against the units, not subjects.

This form is electronic. Click on a field to type in the information. When complete,
use the ‘Save As’ function to save the file using your name as the file name and email
the form to the course coordinator using the email address on the cover page.
Step 1 – Establish RPL eligibility
Sometimes it can be hard to determine if you are eligible for RPL or not. Use the simple
questions below to determine whether you should apply or not. If in doubt, just apply for
something and let us make the decision for you.
Activity
Completed?
Do you currently work as an environmental technician, scientist or
manager?
Have you previously worked as an environmental technician, scientist or
manager?
Do you currently work in a related field to environmental technology (i.e.
lab)?
Have you previously worked in a related field to environmental

If you answered YES to any of these questions, move to Step 2 below

If you answered NO to every question, it is highly unlikely that you are eligible for
RPL. You will need to complete the whole course.

NOTE: You must be careful when choosing the units you want to gain recognition for;

If the unit forms part of a subject, you may need to do the subject anyway to
complete the other units that make up that subject.

Recognition can affect your centrelink payments due to reduced hours

100% recognition is only possible through the Recognition Center on Campus

Step 4 – Evidence collection
Once we receive this form, we will determine what evidence collection tools you need to
complete the process. If RPL is warranted, you will receive an RPL Kit (Part B) to complete
which is a framework of the units contained in the course against which you will be required
to collect the appropriate evidence.
While you wait for our response to your enquiry, be mindful of the following notes on the
collection of evidence.
What is evidence?
When you apply for RPL, you need to provide us with evidence of your skills and knowledge
so that we can validate your request. Validation of evidence is performed in accordance
with the standards of the Australian Skills Quality Authority and other regulatory standards.
This means that the evidence you collect must meet the four basic criteria of;
Validity
Does your evidence relate directly to the unit of competency; demonstrate relevant skills &
knowledge; and is it appropriate to the relevant level required by the competency?
Authenticity
Can each piece of evidence be clearly identified as your own work and is it dated and
referenced; where your evidence is part of teamwork, is your specific role clearly defined;
are qualifications, references, licence’s etc presented by you certified documents; are your
verbal or written accounts about what you can do verified by a credible third party and/or
supported by documented evidence?
Sufficiency
Does your evidence include all the critical tasks and knowledge in the unit of competency;
prove you have performed these over a period of time and in different situations; and have
you submitted enough different forms of evidence?
Currency/Quality
Does the evidence you will provide meet current industry needs and is it relevant to the
elements and performance criteria.
We should get back to you within seven days of receipt of this request.
